On the surface the story was simple enough. Valentina, a conscientious civil servant in charge of the regional housing office, and Maxim, a geologist-prospector and guitar player devoted to an itinerant and adventurous life, have a difficult relationship – a series of brief encounters and lengthy separations. Their episodic meetings bring into focus their love and need for each other, but also their basic differences, disappointments, and resentment. Synopsis:
‘Léandre Brassac is an ageing veterinary who lives in a large house near to Nantes with his wife Marie, whom he openly despises and frequently abuses. Léandre resents the fact that his wife has failed to bear him any children, and as a result he has become a violent and moody old man, contemptuous of others and all too willing to drown his sorrows in alcohol. Whilst he may loathe people, Brassac shows a remarkable tenderness for animals, especially the dogs who have become his closest companions in his declining years. One of Joe Sarno’s first color movies, Moonlighting Wives is supposedly loosely based on a true story about a group of bored suburban women who ran a prostitution ring in their neighborhood. Interesting material for one of Sarno’s suburban psycho-sexual melodrama’s to be sure, but those expecting boat load’s of kink and softcore bump and grind action might be taken aback by how tame this film really is when compared to much of his other work.Read More »
