  • Charles Chaplin – The Gold Rush (1925)

    Dave Kehr, Chicago Reader wrote:
Charles Chaplin’s best-loved film, with the tramp down-and-out (as usual) in Alaska, where he looks for gold, falls in love with a dance-hall girl (Georgia Hale), eats his shoes for Thanksgiving dinner, and ends up a millionaire. The blend of slapstick and pathos is seamless, although the cynicism of the final scene is still surprising. Chaplin’s later films are quirkier and more personal, but this is quintessential Charlie, and unmissable. The film has been issued in several different forms with different sound tracks and cuts, including a 72-minute version butchered by Chaplin himself in the 40s. Hold out for the 1925 original, which runs 82 minutes.Read More »

Gérard (26 year-old G.Depardieu in a star-making, César-nominated performance) is the he-man single father of a little baby boy who meets carefree, sensuous Valérie (ravishingly beautiful 21 year-old Ornella Muti). They feel instantly attracted to each other, she moves in with him on the spot, they fall in love, she fancies playing stepmother to the baby, he gets jealous, she wants freedom, he gets enraged, she no longer fancies constant love-making, he gets desperate, they quarrel and fight, and things disintegrate until the totally shocking finale knocks you OUT!
This film was banned mostly everywhere outside Europe, including the US – and you won’t find it in VHS or DVD for sale on Amazon, or for rent in your local store. This version is a German-dubbed one from “Arte” TV channel, English subs are included in the archive.

    Review from thefilmdb.co.uk
Q’ opens with a heavy dose of nudity – a shower scene shot from the neck down as multiple naked women engage in conversation. We don’t see their faces, just their bodies. Writer/director Laurent Bouhnik holds the shot long enough for the scene to evolve from titilation into something more, establishing leaders and followers of the group.

As the film progresses, more leaders and followers emerge to whom sex is seen as either a weapon/threat or a comfort/shield. Our throughline is a vivacious young, sexually dominant girl (Deborah Revy as Cecile) whose desire upturns the cast of characters.

Q’ uses unsimulated sex scenes to establish these powerful relationships. The images are both tasteful and resonant. The actors come across as brave and natural, but the script doesn’t offer enough solid material to sustain what we are seeing.

This is a curiously drawn and handsomely staged work, miles away from being another sleazy drama, but it’s a victim of its own fragmented narrative.Read More »
