From DVD booklet:
The works recorded here are made by Jun Kurosawa mainly in his years
at university.
The remarks on Jun Kurosawa’s works have been focusing on his
impulse of destruction, which are expressed in degenerative keywords
such as “death” and “thanatos”: whereas aesthetical images are
also often mentioned. Is it because his distinct features help them to
establish such images? The features can be described as “film scratch”
and “harsh noise,” all of which can be found in his masterpieces such
as “NEKO-MIMI (1994)” and “JESUS WITH ONE LEG (1991-1994).”Read More »

In this one, Nemuri meets a local Finance Commissioner who runs afoul of the Shogun’s high-living daughter when he cuts off her allowance. Nemuri is impressed by the old man’s integrity and saves his life, thus making himself a target of assassins. It’s an interesting tale relating the delicate dilemmas faced by public officials in old Japan trying to maintain public order yet not offend powerful interests. However, it gets quite convoluted as it involves a growing cast of characters, including at least five men who want to kill Nemuri, all for varying reasons, including one who just wants to test his swordplay skill against Nemuri’s “Full Moon Cut” technique.Read More »

Quote:
Triste is an indication of the level of cinema language that I have been working towards. By delicately shifting the weight and solidity of the images, and bringing together subject matter not ordinarily associated, a deeper sense of impermanence and mystery can open. The images are as much pure-energy objects as representation of verbal understanding and the screen itself is transformed into a “speaking” character. The “sadness” referred to in the title is more the struggle of the film itself to become a film as such, rather than some pervasive mood. N. D.Read More »
