• Hugues Burin des Roziers – Blue Jeans (1977)

    1971-1980DramaFranceHugues Burin des Roziers

Love found and lost, and found again and the promiscuity of European youth in the 1970’s is the premise behind Blue Jeans. Director Hugues Burin des Roziers’ first feature length film tells the story of Julien Morin, an 11-year-old boy from an affluent area of Paris who takes a summer-long trip with his class to England to learn English. Along with his friends Talimard, Picolet and Dupont, the class seems more interested in meeting girls and having fun than learning English. Julien’s attentions soon turn away from his English classes and to Janet, a local girl he meets in an arcade. When she spurns him for Jean-Pierre, an older French boy, Julien too finds a physical attraction to this handsome boy. Labeled as a queer and laughed at, Julien is at first unaffected by these hurtful remarks and yearns to spend more time with his new friend. Jean-Pierre, however, is unaware of Julien’s true feelings.Read More »

    Andrey Konchalovskiy2001-2010ComedyDramaRussia

    Synopsis:
Contempory Moscow, Russia. Young Galya (Yuliya Vysotskaya) comes to Moscow from the coal-mining town of Shakhty in the Rostov Oblast near the Black Sea, a journey of over 500 miles. She is pretty and bright, if a bit naive and disorganized. Her dream is to become an elite high-fashion model — a supermodel — and to see her image on the glossy cover of the fashion magazine Beauty. When she meets the editor-in-chief of Beauty Magazine, however, he tells Galya that she lacks the necessary natural beauty and sense of style to be a model, and she will never appear on their cover. She then goes to work as a seamstress for a famous fashion designer. During one of their shows, quite by accident, she ends up walking the runway as a model. They fire her on the spot. Then, seemingly by chance, she becomes the assistant of the owner of an elite, highly exclusive, personal matchmaking agency, which — for a considerable price — arranges marriages for rich men with the most beautiful models in Moscow. Soon, she, too, will learn how to be an “elitnaya nevesta (elite bride)”.Read More »

  • Jirí Menzel – Skrivánci na niti AKA Larks on a String (1969)

    Jirí Menzel1961-1970Czech RepublicDramaPolitics

Shot in 1968, but banned by the Czech government until the fall of the Communist regime in 1990, Menzel’s wry comic drama is a hymn to humanity and nonconformity. The film’s principal characters are residents of a state-run junkyard / labour camp for those whose actions have been deemed counter-revolutionary. On one side of the yard live the men, most sent here for re-education. On the other side, are a group of women interned for the crime of attempted defection. Separately, the two groups lazily toil, sorting out piles of scrap metal (one huge pile is nothing less than a veritable mountain of crucifixes and religious icons); together, they flirt, philosophize, and occasionally sneak off behind the hillocks of slag to make love. Larks on a String is at once a stinging indictment of the repressive politics of Czechoslovakia’s past, and an endearing comedy and affecting love story.Read More »
