  • Lance Comfort – Penn of Pennsylvania (1942)

    Plot Synopsis
“Originally released in England as Penn of Pennsylvania, this is the story of legendary Quaker leader William Penn. As portrayed by Clifford Evans, Penn is courageous if pedantic crusader for religious liberties, bound and determined to create a new colony for himself and his fellow Quakers. This he does when he journeys to the New World to form the colony of Pennsylvania. Understandably concentrating on Penn and his disciples, the film gives short shrift to several other important historical characters, notably King Charles II (Dennis Arundell). Deborah Kerr is likewise given little to do as Penn’s faithful and supportive wife Gulielma.”–Hal Erickson, AllMovieRead More »

Amsterdam: city of pigeons, karate and dirty movies
    12 November 2004 | by Chip_douglas (Rijswijk, ZH, Netherlands)

This 1973 film is based on one of six ‘Srillers’ (short for sarcastic thriller) by Rinus Ferdinandusse, who also co-wrote the screenplay and appears in the film. It stars Rijk de Gooijer as Rutger Maria Lemming, or Rick for short. Lemming suffers from Angela Lansbury syndrome: murder mysteries regularly cross his part even though he is happy milking pigeons and running a pinball arcade. When his loyal but gullible friend and former karate champ Ed Swaan (John Blumming) finds himself involved with some pornographers, the two of them set about getting their hands on the embarrassing footage.Read More »

  • Mark Goodall – Sweet & Savage: The World Through The Shockumentary Film Lens (2006)

    The Back Cover wrote:
Mondo Cane in 1962 was the blueprint for a shocking, controversial and influential documentary film cycle. Known collectively as “mondo films” or “shockumentaries,” this enduring series of films is a precursor of the reality TV show.

A box-office draw for three decades and now a staple of the video rental market, these explosive “exposés” would often pass fabricated scenes as fact in order to give the public a sensationalist, highly emotive view of the world.

Sweet & Savage is the first-ever English-language book devoted exclusively to the mondo documentary film. A study of mondo as a global film phenomenon, it includes a detailed examination of the key films and includes exclusive interviews with the godfathers of this cult genre.Read More »
