EUROPE in the RAW is an unrestrained, voluptuous, and wanton excursion to the birthplace of sensual erotism. Much of this captivating film was shot with the camera carefully concealed in a briefcase. With the camera hidden in such a novel fashion, we were able to film many behind – the – scenes activities which, otherwise, would not have been allowed. Other photographers who have tried to film the uninhibited footage have had their cameras and film confiscated by law enforcement authorities, or have been subjected to bodily harm by members of the underworld. Even filming this sensational footage clandestinely involved great risks. Now, Russ Meyer, the creator of THE IMMORAL MR. TEAS, brings to the screen his greatest triumph . . .

Midi Z – The Road to Mandalay (2016)
Drama2011-2020Midi ZThailandQuote:
Taiwan-based Burmese filmmaker Midi Z produces his best work yet with “The Road to Mandalay.” Returning to narrative features after the documentaries “Jade Miners” and “City of Jade,” Z maintains his focus on Burmese exiles with a low-key, high-impact love story about two illegal immigrants with very different ideas about making money and starting a new life in Bangkok. Very well performed by Z’s regular actress Wu Ke-xi and established Taiwanese star Kai Ko (“You Are the Apple of My Eye”), “The Road to Mandalay” is bound to travel far and wide on the fest circuit following a prestigious hat-trick of selections in Venice, Toronto, and Busan. Taiwan and Hong Kong theatrical release is set for Dec. 9.Read More » -

Sara Gómez – De cierta manera AKA One Way or Another (1977)
Drama1971-1980CubaDocumentarySara GómezThe Female GazeHere is a revolutionary film: dialectical in form and content, humble in the face of real human experience, proposing no final answers except the unending struggle of a people to make something out of what history has made of them. De cierta manera is that powerful hybrid—the fictional documentary set to a tropical beat—for which the cinema of revolutionary Cuba is justifiably famous. In this instance, the documentary deals with the destruction of slum housing and the struggle against the culture of marginality generated in such slums through the creation of a new housing project (Miraflores) and an accompanying educational program. The fictional embodiment of this historical process is seen in the clash of attitudes between Mario (a product of the slums), his lover Yolanda (a teacher who has come to Miraflores to help integrate such marginal elements into the revolution), and his friend Humberto (a fun-loving slacker). In the course of telling these stories, and others, De cierta manera demolishes the categories of fiction and documentary, insisting that both forms are equally mediated by the intention of the filmmaker, and that both thus require a critical stance.Read More »

Eric Rohmer – L’ami de mon amie AKA My Girlfriend’s Boyfriend (1987)
1981-1990ComedyDramaEric RohmerFranceBoyfriends & Girlfriends is the sixth of French director Eric Rohmer’s “Comedies et Proverbes” cycle. The sterility of the “new”, prefabricated Parisian suburb of Cergy-Pontoise is used as the backdrop for the colorful activities of the film’s five principals (literally colorful, in that each character is represented by a different hue). The dramatis personae includes Ministry of Cultural Affairs worker Blanche (Emmanuelle Chaulet); Blanche’s friend, computer school student Lea (Sophie Renoir); Lea’s beau (Eric Viellard); unregenerate “wolf” (Francois-Eric Gendron); and his lady friend, iconoclastic art student Adrienne (Anne-Laure Meury). A windsurfing weekend is the scene for an elongated shakeup and reassessment of everyone’s relationships.

James Benning – Deseret [+ Extra] (1995)
1991-2000ArthouseExperimentalJames BenningUSAFrom the Chicago Reader
One of the best films of James Benning, one of this country’s leading experimental filmmakers, is this multifaceted look at the landscape and history of Utah (or Deseret, as the Mormon Church prefers to call it). Benning condenses 93 news stories from the New York Times from 1852 to 1992 (read offscreen by Fred Gardner) and sets them against contemporary Utah landscapes, the shots changing with each sentence. Benning’s eye for evocative beauty is as sharp as ever, and his complex invitation to the viewer to create a narrative space between his separate elements keeps this 1995 film continually fascinating. 82 min.Read More » -
