A Russian Jewish father emigrates to America in 1923, with a promise to send for his mother and young daughter when he is settled. When his village is burned in a pogrom, his mother is killed and his daughter is separated from other youngsters who make it to the port to emigrate. Many years later, Suzie’s talent for singing and dancing sees her accepted into a Paris dance troupe where she is befriended by Lola, a fellow dancer from Moscow. Cesar, a handsome brooding gypsy who works with the troupe later becomes her lover. Lola pursues Dante, an egotistical tenor who is performing in the area. Guled makes a living as a gravedigger in Djibouti, and a normal day on the job for him consists of waiting outside the hospital gates for dead bodies to be sent out to be buried. Illness and death are far from abstract concepts to Guled, but when his wife Nasra becomes seriously ill his world is turned upside down. He needs to get the money to pay for her medical treatment, and waiting for others to die so he can bury them is simply too slow. He must think outside the box and step outside of his comfort zone in order to find a solution.

‘The film “Ung frue forsvunnet” by acclaimed female Norwegian film maker Edith Calmar starts off this story in 1949 with a husband come home from a mountain trip, finding his young wife for two years, being traceless missing. She’s been gone for days, and the police is immediately contacted. A couple living on boat finds the woman’s hat floating, and it seem she’s dead either by being killed or falling into the river.
The manuscript is quite well done, and the story unfolds as the husband tells about his life with his wife, from meeting her casually. There’s a secret she’s never told him, because he didn’t want to hear it. This secret obviously is the reason for her disappearance.’
