  • Yôjirô Takita – Komikku zasshi nanka iranai! AKA No More Comics! AKA Comic Magazine (1986)

    1981-1990ComedyDramaJapanYôjirô Takita

    Quote:
A powerhouse reenactment of a 1985 ethics scandal that rocked the Japanese journalistic world. Pop star Yuya Uchida plays a TV entertainment reporter who is egged on by his bosses to “pump up” his telecasts. He gets his opportunity when a prominent investment manager, caught in the middle of a fraudulent gold investment scheme, locks himself in his lavish home. While Uchida and the other reporters try to gain entrance, two disreputable-looking gentlemen, announcing that they’ve been paid to assassinate the crooked investor, walk into the home unmolested–then walk out a few moments later, soaked in blood. No one lifts a finger to stop the two hit men from leaving….and it sure makes a swell TV story. Astonishingly, many of the characters in Comic Magazine–reporters, investors, even a pair of Yakuza mobsters-are the genuine article. Voyeuristic to the nth degree, Comic Magazine was highly praised when it was first released in Japan under the title Komikku Zasshi Nanka Irani. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie GuideRead More »

  • Makoto Shinozaki – Jam Session (1999)

Tony Rayns in Time Out Film Guide wrote:
When Office Kitano commissioned Shinozaki to record Kitano’s work on Kikujiro from the start of shooting to the screening of the ‘A’ copy, they knew he wouldn’t do a standard ‘Making of’. Since Kitano shot the film more or less in sequence and improvised a lot, Shinozaki is able to turn his documentary into an authentic ‘bootleg’: an anthology of out-takes, mistakes and deleted scenes which adds up to a ‘parallel’ version of the film itself. It’s also a very candid portrait of Kitano in his self-deprecatory prime – especially when nearly lost for words during a social chat with Hou Xiaoxian. One caveat: Kitano himself sings the song under the end credits.Read More »

  • Takeshi Kitano – Ano natsu, ichiban shizukana umi AKA A Scene at the Sea (1991)

    1991-2000DramaJapanRomanceTakeshi Kitano

    Quote:
Third Window Films continues their collection of Takeshi Kitano Blu-rays with a revisit of his 1991 film, A Scene at the Sea. At the time Kitano was still seen largely as a comeic performer and his first two films started to change that perception and give him a small taste of international recognition. However, it is with A Scene at the Sea, his third feature as a director, that Kitano really showed the film world his skill set. Not only was it his first film as a director that didn’t feature him in an acting role, it also distanced itself from the previous two yakuza driven features and proved that Kitano is a force ot be reckoned with and a truew artist, rather than a hired gun.Read More »
