Quote:
Meiting is a hairdresser in Beijing. Her parents were sent to the countryside during the Cultural Revolution. After their divorce Meiting returned to the city to her grandfather’s. Chen Mo is a country boy who came to Beijing looking for work and a better life. He would like to send his blind brother the money necessary for an operation. A tortuous relationship between Meiting and Chen Mo begins.
Thanks to its command of realistic aesthetics and a pleasantly simple narrative, Chen Mo he Meiting illustrates the tense relationship between two uprooted youngsters. In search of their lost filial affection, they build a semblance of family life in a small apartment that evokes more of a child’s room. Through mutual by mere convention they protect and vow unconditional love to each other. The director succeeds in clearing a path for the audience towards the emotional distress of the two characters. At the same time he accurately describes everyday life in the Chinese megapolis: the proliferation of small jobs, the daily struggle to work despite it all, the solitude of each individual who has to face the improbable equation of higher and higher rents and smaller and smaller rooms.
