John Sayles – Limbo (1999)

In an economically devastated Alaskan town, a fisherman with a troublesome past dates a woman whose young daughter does not approve of him. When he witnesses the murder of his shady brother, he, the woman and the kid run to the wilderness.

Quote:
In keeping with Sayles’ tradition of assaulting the conventions of mainstream Hollywood cinema, Limbo adopts an aggressively bifurcated narrative structure. The first half of the film is a typically Saylesian character study in which a down-on-her-luck nightclub singer meets a down-on-his-luck former boat captain in Juneau, Alaska. The film takes a bizarre narrative turn at its midpoint, when the two lovers, along with the singer’s alienated teenage daughter, find themselves trapped on an out-of-the-way island without provisions or hope of being rescued. The film thus completely shifts genres, moving without notice from a mid-life romance to a survivalist melodrama. In the film’s most radical narrative gesture, Sayles ends the film with an unnerving sense of ambiguity, indicating that the film’s metaphorical title refers not just to the characters’ lives, as we think while watching the movie, but to our own status as audience members of a true-to-life cinema, as we think while leaving the theater and returning to our own ordinary lives.
