The novels “Dziewczęta z Nowolipek” and “Rajska jabłoń” by Pola Gojawiczyńska were published in the middle of the 1930s. The author, using her own experience and memories, described the childhood and youth of several friends, residents of the Warsaw district of Nowolipki. The novel “Dziewczęta z Nowolipek” was first screened in 1937 by Józef Lejtes. This film adaptation was highly acclaimed. There were even voices that the film was artistically superior to Gojawiczyńska’s prose. The novel was adapted for the film for the second time at the beginning of the 1970s. This television adaptation also included “Rajska jabłoń” (“Paradise Apple”). The director Stanisław Wohl cast Emilia Krakowska, Elżbieta Kępińska, Zofia Kucówna and Ewa Wisniewska in the leading roles. Barbara Sass’ film is the third adaptation of Gojawiczyńska’s novel.
We get to know the protagonists of the film in the last years before the outbreak of the war. Franka, Kwiryna, Bronka and Amelka graduated from primary school. Apart from Kwirina, they are all in a difficult financial situation, and yet they would like to continue their studies. It is not easy to get out of poverty in Nowolipki and the girls are aware of it. The first love experiences shape their characters differently, but all four are severely experienced through life. Bronka’s first love for the sensitive girl ends in a brutal rape, and then she ends up on the street. Bronka waits in vain for letters from Ignasio Pędzicki, whom she has sincerely loved, falls into apathy and is connected with Różycki, who is completely indifferent to her. Kwiryna’s parents are murdered, but she doesn’t break down, and decides to start living on her own. Amelka becomes pregnant with an official from Michałowski, who encourages her to get rid of the child. The treatment leaves permanent traces in her psyche.
