László Benedek – Recours en grâce AKA Recourse in Grace (1960)

Synopsis:
‘Mario di Donati, a deserter from the Italian army, lives in Paris under a false name with Germaine, his French lover. When the latter learns about his hidden past, she feels hurt by Mario’s lack of trust in her and she distances herself from him. In despair, Mario surrenders to the law but, at the time of trial, he runs away to join the woman he loves…’
– Guy Bellinger
A film not particularly well-liked by critics, Recours en grâce has genuinely potent points of interest, especially the ease with which Mario’s wartime buddies switch into the “clandestine activities” mode, promptly transporting Paris back to the time of the Occupation, and the chilling ending that cleverly reimagines “the greatest horror of all” bit from Graham Greene’s Brighton Rock.
