Jan‘s (23) greatest passion is his animals. The reclusive biology student‘s apartment is filled with aquariums, terrariums, and cages. His fellow student Alice (23), an environmental activist, is attracted to his eccentric sensitivity. Jan gets involved in the group‘s actions when he tries to prevent Alice from getting arrested. When the two finally fall in love, Jan is elated. But the strong emotions, social life, and Alice‘s proximity seem to be too much for him. Alternating between early-1970’s interviews with his wife, priest, and other villagers and re-enactments of his final months, the film follows Austrian peasant farmer Franz Jaegerstaetter’s path to martyrdom under the Nazis. The first scene shows his execution, followed by a graveyard tableau in which Franz objects to his priest’s praise for a fallen soldier’s patriotism. On 22 June 1941, Germany and Romania attack Soviet Russia. Several days later, Curzio Malaparte, the Italian writer who would one day pen the novel « Kaputt », a war correspondent for « Corriere de la Sera », arrives in Iasi, in the north of Moldova, on his way to the front, which is nearby. He is incapacitated by a severe allergy and his only chance of recovery is to find a Jewish doctor, an allergologist who had studied in Florence, called Josef Gruber. All his attempts to find him are unsuccessful. While looking for him, Curzio discovers that in Iasi, several days prior to his arrival, a violent anti-Semitic pogrom took place and that a large number of the Jewish citizens of Iasi were deported by train and that Dr Gruber may be among them.
