Luciano Salce – El Greco (1966)

16th-century Spain, the famed Italian painter El Greco journeys to Toledo to paint an altarpiece. Trouble ensues when he falls in love with a beautiful local girl (imdb)
it takes us to a period that seems almost otherworldly now, thanks in particular to the intelligent manner in which the plot develops. In the 16th century, El Greco arrives in Toledo, a Spanish province marred by obscurantism and classism, both of which will prove to be the artist’s fate. Fiercely independent and naturally impulsive, he eventually falls in love with the wrong woman, and prey to the Holy Office of the Inquisition.
Locations in Spain and Rome provide the movie with an authentic look, and, perhaps even more significantly (and not surprisingly), Ennio Morricone’s score brings out the heart of the matter. This being the heartbreaking love story between El Greco and Jerónima de Las Cuevas (Rosanna Schiaffino), a young lady belonging to Toledo’s local nobility, the artist suddenly faces swashbuckling duels for which he is far from prepared and false accusations of necromancy. Dangerous realities that encircle the ambitious great as shadowy figures surround Christ in the night of his canvas (letterboxd)
