A French adaptation of the second (and much less well-known) version of D.H. Lawrence’s erotic tale.

Sir Clifford has returned from the Great War to his estate near Sheffield, paralyzed from the waist down. Lady Constance, his young wife, cares for him, but she’s lifeless, enervated. Her physician prescribes the open air, and she finds a quiet retreat at the hut – the workplace – of Parkin, the estate’s gamekeeper. The rhythms of nature awaken Connie – daffodils, pheasant chicks – and soon she and Parkin become lovers. She’s now radiant. Parkin, too, opens up. Class distinctions and gender roles may be barriers to the affair becoming more. Connie’s trip to France, with her father and sister, bring the lovers to a nuanced resolution.Read More »

Plot: Through a combination of hard work and ruthlessness, Albert Ménard-Lacoste (Michel Simon) has become a wealthy businessman, although his austerity prevents him from being loved, even by his family. One day, he is confronted by his worst nightmare in the form of his estranged brother Alain, who is his polar opposite – an easy-going, penniless drifter. Albert’s first reaction is to dismiss Alain from his sight. But then he has a change of heart and drops in on the shabby lodgings where Alain is living. Albert is about to offer his brother a job when the latter suffers a fatal heart-attack. Immediately, the cunning businessman sees a way to make a fresh start and perhaps settle a few scores with his family. He swaps his clothes with Alain and assumes the dead man’s identity. • Éric Rohmer – L’arbre, le maire et la médiathèque AKA The Tree, the Mayor and the Mediatheque (1993)

    1991-2000ArthouseComedyEric RohmerFrance

    Synopsis:
The mayor (Pascal Greggory) of this unpolished provincial town has plans for a beautiful field on the edge of town, and he’s quite sure they will be put through the central government in time to help him with his political career. He intends to replace the field with a sports and “cultural” center, along with a large parking lot. The only overt opposition to this plan at the outset comes from an environmentally sensitive grammar school teacher (Fabrice Luchini), and he’s hardly a threat, because he doesn’t imagine he can successfully oppose the builders’ designs. Meanwhile, the mayor has fallen in love with one of the local representatives of the intelligentsia, a woman novelist (Arielle Dombasle). Trouble begins to percolate into the mayor’s life and thwart his plans when his daughter and the daughter of the schoolteacher become friends.
