Alain Cavalier – Pater (2011)

“Then, I met Vincent, and thought that I could perhaps make a film with him,” Mr. Cavalier said. “We shot for a year and I find him fascinating, a man afire, gnawed by inner resistances and doubts.”

He worked with a skeleton script and cast. “I didn’t write one line of dialogue, just a sketch, nine pages, about how I met Vincent, and how we decided to work together, how I would film.” Costs were minimum: Michel Seydoux returns as his producer.

If you ask if he had found a son, he laughs. “Actually, I have a daughter, Camille de Casabianca — her mother was a film editor — she’s very interesting and makes movies.

“It was more about finding a father, perhaps,” he said. “ I miss my father. Our life together was not exactly “La vie en rose,” or warm. So I created that warmth with Vincent; the year of working together changed us.”

Mr. Cavalier describes “Pater” as a film “about the intimacy of power and how it is like the intimacy of making a movie together, without a cast, without a classical team.”
