  • Mervyn LeRoy – Show Girl in Hollywood (1930)

    1921-1930ClassicsMervyn LeRoyMusicalUSA

‘Rainbow Girls’ has just opened and closed on Broadway when Dixie, a actress in it, runs into smooth-talking Hollywood Director Frank Buelow. He tells her she would be a natural and promises her a movie contract, so she goes to Hollywood, but there is no contract for her. She meets washed-up actress Donny (Blanche Sweet) on the lot and they become friends. Frank is fired from his studio and the new director finds that Frank’s storyline is actually a copy of ‘Rainbow Girls,’ the Broadway stage play. They call Jimmy, the author and Dixie’s boyfriend, for the rights and he goes to Hollywood to produce it as a movie. Dixie gets the lead, but things start going wrong when dizzy Dixie, spurred on by the fired Director Buelow, thinks that she is better than the picture or the studio and starts to make demands. Interesting note: Good look at early Hollywood, with cameos by Loretta Young, Walter Pigeon, Noah Beery and a young Noah Beery, Jr. make the film fun to watch.Read More »

  • Gary Hawkins – The Rough South of Harry Crews (1991)

    1991-2000DocumentaryGary HawkinsUSA

    imdb:
Writer-director Gary Hawkins’s first “Rough South” entry, “The Rough South of Harry Crews,” bases his show on Crew’s revealing remark, “What has been most significant in my life had all taken place by the time I was six years old.” Hawkins re-enacts the early episodes of Crew’s childhood through a still-photo technique reminiscent of Chris Marker’s “La Jette,” juxtaposing the stills against Crew’s commentary to reveal the source of his adult literary themes.Read More »

  • Robert Beavers – Ruskin (1974)

    1971-1980ExperimentalRobert BeaversShort FilmUSA

    Synopsis
“Ruskin visits the sites of (art critic) John Ruskin’s work: London, the Alps and, above all, Venice, where the camera’s attention to masonry and the interaction of architecture and water mimics the author’s descriptive analysis of the ‘stones’ of the city. The sound of pages turning and the image of a book, Ruskin’s Unto This Last, forcibly reminds us that a poet’s perceptions and in this case his political economy, are preserved and reawakened through acts of reading and writing”.

    Summary:
A 5 part film that deals with a variety of subjects and themes, such as isolation, mental illness, and the subjectivity of reality. Something integral to the point of this overall series is visualizing and externalizing different characters’ worldviews through what visual medium is being used and how their view of the world is presented, & establishing an internal visual and aural vernacular inside the series of films that make certain subtle aspects make sense to people who are paying attention. The 5 different parts can all be viewed individually and are meant to make sense on their own, but when viewed together and in sequence bring a different and more interesting context to each of the pieces.Read More »
