Story:
The successful producer-director combination of Walter Wanger and Tay Garnett served up another winner with Slightly Honorable. Adapted from F. G. Presnell’s novel Send Another Coffin, the story concerns the efforts made by corrupt politician Cushing (Edward Arnold) to frame honest attorney John Webb (Pat O’Brien) for the murder of Alma Brehmer (Claire Dodd). In concert with his diligent and apparently slow-witted assistant Rus Sampson (Broderick Crawford), Webb hopes to squelch Cushing’s plan by locating the real murderer-who turns out to be a lot closer to Webb than he’d ever imagined. Ruth Terry has one of her best screen roles as a birdbrained nightclub hoofer who helps Webb clear himself. – Hal Erikson, All Movie GuideRead More »

Letterboxd review
★★★½ Watched by Lou (rhymes with wow!) 22 Jun 2021Deliciously gothic and weirdly erotic, Death Smiles on a Murder is a wonderful slice of Joe D’Amato bizarreness. The movie has an almost dream-like quality to it, which had me clueless as to what exactly was unfolding on screen. All I know for certain is that when you give Klaus Kinski some beakers you’ll end up with magic. Also, there is no such thing as too many cat jump scares.
I got to search out some more Ewa Aulin movies.Read More »

Rintaro Mayuzumi & Kazuyoshi Okuyama – Rampo AKA The Mystery of Rampo (1994)
1991-2000ArthouseJapanKazuyoshi OkuyamaMysteryRintaro MayuzumiEdogawa Rampo is a writer whose latest work is censored by the government, deemed too disturbing and injurious to the public to be allowed to be published. However, after burning his drafts, his publisher shows him a newspaper with an account of events just like his forbidden story. As the film progresses, fantasy and reality intermingle in a tale that draws heavily on influences from Poe and Stoker’s Dracula. The film’s strongly Expressionistic direction skillfully combines a variety of media (animation, computer-generated imagery, grainy black-and-white fast film stock, color negatives) for artistic effect.Read More »
