In the turn of the century in London, the aristocratic lawyer Barry Lanfield proposes to marry the heiress Phyllis Allenby and she accepts. Phyllis lives in the family manor with her “aunt” Martha Winthrop, her pseudo-niece Carol Winthrop and the housemaid Hannah.
