  • Fred Halsted – The Sex Garage (1972)

    Quote:
Fred Halsted, S&M aficionado and XXX film actor, emerged as a director rivaling Kenneth Anger in the genre of gay art-erotica. L.A. Plays Itself (1972) was his take on the same territory as Anger’s Scorpio Rising. When it opened at the 55th Street Playhouse, doubled billed with his Sex Garage, it was a case of see-it-now, or now you don’t. The police shut it down – not for the notorious fisting vignette that climaxes L.A. Plays Itself (which is cut from the video versions), but for a scene in which a guy gets it on with his motorcycle.Read More »

  • Kichitaro Negishi – Kurutta kajitsu AKA Crazed Fruit (1981)

    1981-1990DramaEroticaJapanKichitaro Negishi

    Synopsis
Here’s a terrific updating of the 1956 Nikkatsu classic Crazed Fruit; a new version that is superior to the original. While the original was a seminal sun tribe classic, the new version examines the 1980s Japanese youth from a more intimate, less political perspective. Consequently, it’s a remake in name only. The film focuses on the unstable relationship between two youngsters: a guy working in a sex club and a rich girl who trades her stepfather lover for a younger boyfriend just for a change. Neither one of them really understand each other – or themselves. Like many of director Kichitaro Negishi’s other films, this movie would also be more at home in Art Theatre Guild’s catalogue than in the Roman Porno series where it was released (Negishi’s next film, Distant Thunder, was, in fact, an ATG production). SYNOPSIS
Debbie, a lily-white virgin, is abducted by a gang of black men being paid by whites to start a race riot. After violating her in a Cadillac, the men take her to a country cabin. Duke, the leader, takes possession of her but then loses her in a poker game. The violence escalates to a full throttled climax. Filled with stark, brutal imagery from start to finish, Hot Summer In The City is a haunting film you won’t soon forget. The characters are so believable that it seems like a documentary. Lisa Baker’s sexy screen presence is mute and ghostlike.Read More »

  • José Bénazéraf – Nuit la plus longue AKA Sexus (1965)

    Arthouse1961-1970EroticaFranceJosé Bénazéraf

    Quote:
As we all often learn in life, it’s the little, simple things that can have a big impact. Bénazéraf doesn’t go for complexity here, and his plot is pretty simple for the most part. Yet Sexus does leave it’s mark on the mind, and sometimes a director can communicate things without even realising it. With it’s odd framing device, throbbing score and luminous imagery, Bénazéraf lets us in on his obsessions, and if you are in the right frame of mind, you can dive right in with him into the whirlpool. I look forward to covering more of his films in these pages. Though not quite in the realm of some of the more obvious Sinema covered here, the blood pumping under the filmic flesh would appear to be the same. It’s a hip, jazzy feast for the senses, if you can track it down.Read More »
