Tony Rayns has followed up the Jang Sun-Woo retrospective he curated for the International Film Festival Rotterdam in 1997 by making an intimate portrait of Korea’s most iconoclastic director as he prepares two new films: the live-action cyber-action thriller The Resurrection of the Little Match Girl and the animated buddhist/shamanist feature Princess Bari. Divided into chapters, the documentary examines Jang’s career and films from many different angles and includes the voices not only of those who have worked with Jang but also of numerous ordinary Koreans who have been touched/shocked/excited/offended by his work.Read More »

I kept one to verify this myself and it gave birth at my place, so the story is not a lie.”

Joy Levine lives in an old apartment that, in complete contrast to her, is shabby and worn-out on the outside while well-kept and filled with joy on the inside. Her life changes when she auditions for a TV show called “Gotta Be Happy”. To her astonishment, she is chosen, and her mission is to throw a surprise party for her parents on the upcoming show. However, there is a price to pay for all this: she has to let the viewers into her private inner world and share with them an event that has been overshadowing her family’s life and hers for the past 22 years; an event that made a tight-knit bunch of friends shun her parents, Chaya and Yitzhak Levine. Buena vida (Delivery) (2004)

This film, the first in De Cesare career, remember me on “Brutti, sporchi e cattivi” one of the greatest Scola films. It’s a simply history of two young people of a suburban place in Buenos Aires. A simply “boy meets girl” one. But the family of the girl came to town and the plot developed to a “grotesco”. The situations are growing to a intense drama and black comedy. De Cesare make the film so transparent, so simply and put his look on characters and relationships. He made it with a naturalist view, and a lot of great actor’s works. Ignacio Toselli simplify the work and “Venancio” make me remember to Nino Manfredi in Scola’s films. The script by De Cesare and Hans Garrino is simple and perfect at the same time. This film win the 19th Mar del Plata film Festival in Best film and best script.Read More »
