  • Peter Maxwell – Serena (1962)

    1961-1970CrimePeter MaxwellUnited Kingdom

    IMDB Review:
A low budget b-movie from Britain’s poverty row specialists – Butcher’s Films. Patrick Holt (a former
leading man in British films of the 1940’s), plays Inspector Gregory of Scotland Yard who investigates the murder of an artist’s wife and the disappearance of his model which coincided with the murder.
Serena is very good for the type of picture it is , while the story is your routine murder mystery, director Peter Maxwell directs at a good pace and the b/w photography of Stephen Dade is very newsreel like and invests the proceedings with a nice feel for 1960’s London . All in all its a cut above the usual quality one normally expects of these things.Read More »

  • Mauro Bolognini – Agostino (1962)

    1961-1970DramaItalyMauro BologniniRomance

    Allmovie Synopsis:
Director Mauro Bolognini and Goffredo Parise adapted a skillful Alberto Moravia story into this rather pedestrian drama. An eligible widow (Ingrid Thulin) vacations in Venice with her young son. When Thulin begins a tentative romance with friendly John Saxon, her resentful son runs away from home and gets into trouble, falling in with a gang of hooligans. The rest of the film is bland and predictable, as the harsh realities of street life teach the youngster some valuable lessons, most of which are hammered home with redundant narration. Plot mechanics aside, however, Aldo Tonti’s rich cinematography still makes the film worthwhile for those who swoon at the sight of the Lido.Read More »

    Quote:
Infused with a jazzy, nouvelle vague–inspired energy, Bo Widerberg’s feature debut has the freshness of youth. Building on his film criticism’s call for a socially relevant Swedish cinema, the writer turned director offers a vivid portrait of a young factory worker (Inger Taube) finding her way toward independence as she weathers unexpected pregnancy, learns hard lessons from relationships with two very different men, and leaves behind the only home she has ever known. Abetted by fellow filmmaker Jan Troell’s coolly beautiful monochrome cinematography, Widerberg takes a bold first step in his mission to create a cinema that is both engaged and engaging.Read More »

  • Ingmar Bergman – Nattvardsgästerna AKA Winter Light (1963)

    Quote:
“God, why hast thou forsaken me?” With Winter Light, Ingmar Bergman explores the search for redemption in a meaningless existence. Small-town pastor Tomas Ericsson (Gunnar Björnstrand) performs his duties mechanically before a dwindling congregation, including his stubbornly devoted lover, Märta (Ingrid Thulin). When he is asked to assuage a troubled parishioner’s (Max von Sydow) debilitating fear of nuclear annihilation, Tomas is terrified to find that he can provide nothing but his own doubt. The beautifully photographed Winter Light is an unsettling look at the human craving for personal validation in a world seemingly abandoned by God.Read More »
