Endaf Emlyn – Un nos ola’ leuad AKA One Full Moon (1991)

After many years in prison a man returns to his town of birth. The memories from his childhood, which culminate in the inexplicable murder of a young girl, are portrayed through flashbacks. The man walks through the town, the same way he walked as a boy.

In a small Welsh town, a boy lives alone with his unstable mother. The mother is determined to see that her son enter the clergy some day, but her insistence on this issue is a source of tension between the woman and her boy. As the child’s protests grow more violent, the mother’s sanity deteriorates, leading to tragedy. Years later, the son, now a grown man, returns to the town where he was born to confront his dark past.

Notes
This Welsh language film was based on the 1961 novel of the same name (translated into English in 1995 as “One Moonlit Night”) by Welsh novelist and poet Caradog Prichard (1904-1980). The novel is considered by some to be the finest Welsh language novel ever written.
