Volker Koepp – Flussfahrt in Ostpreußen – Die Gilge (1999)

Shortly after the once East Prussian, now Russian city of Tilsit, the Memel divides into a delta.

The widest branches of this delta, Ruß and Gilge, finally flow into the Curonian Lagoon. The river landscape is characterized by high soil moisture. Only a complicated drainage system allowed cultivation. The Gilge was also an important waterway. Today this drainage system is falling apart, the Gilge is silting up and the landscape is being renaturalized. The old villages are falling apart due to a lack of money, life is characterized by increasing poverty. We meet the residents, such as the farmer Anatoli, who came here from Siberia and built a new house on the foundations of a German house, or the old Anastasia, who can still remember living with the Germans until they were expelled.

After his award-winning film “Kalte Heimat”, the film is another journey by the renowned documentary filmmaker Volker Koepp into the area of former East Prussia.
