Shun Nakahara – Déracine (2004)

imdb:
A mysterious street-painter, Jouji, wanders aimlessly, homeless. Together with his homeless pals, he makes his living by selling his paintings on the street. His paintings, dynamically exploding on pieces of cardboard, catch the eyes of Kyoko, an art dealer. He can feel alive only if he keeps painting, but unable to find something to fill his void inside, he tries to drown himself in alcohol. Drawn to Jouji, Kyoko commissions him to paint for her. The two travel to a secluded mountain-side, and there Jouji becomes inspired both by the natural surroundings and Kyoko herself.

  1. You are most welcome ! I have to acknowledge that (for now) I remain at the shallower end of some learning curves with this, but hope to keep improving with that over time. These subs did not come out *perfect* — “He / She” or some pronouns appear to have gotten confused, switched up for example. But I would contend that so long as we can derive the gist of what is going on and being said, we are still MANY miles ahead of the game, vs. having no subs at all to go on. I’d also add that *even if* the subs came out perfectly, wherever we don’t really know or understand the background culture, its history, societal expectations, behavioral norms and so on, we can *still* be left seriously puzzled in places. If you love foreign films, you may encounter that phenomenon fairly often.

  2. Were those subs hard or soft ? If hard, that’s a barrier, not readily amenable to standard translation processing. Always useful to know *which*, in regard to the subs. Otherwise, I’d give it a shot. There’s another program that is said to hold promise for this (in tandem masking over the hard subs, while replacing them with alternate new ones, hopefully in a single pass) but I think it is still in an alpha stage of development.

      1. Thanks Ed. My first attempt with Whisper AI crashed my computer. Fortunately that’s an infrequent outcome, but this can happen occasionally, for reasons not yet clear. If other EN subs can’t be found anywhere else, I may as an alternate method try to OCR the Japanese subs. There is also a different translation program I could try, but I’m not giving up on this. Can’t stand hitting a defeat ! Stay tuned !
