  1. An adaptation of Frank Newman’s book, “Barbara” , published in 1968 in “The Traveller’s Companion Series” by Olympia Press. Maurice Girodias funded the production $32,000 and distributed the movie with no great success. No wonder, as this is not the usual softcore flick. It’s more like a hippie sex trip shot in a beautiful grainy b&w and it’s quite experimental in parts, including a so-called “Tribute à Godard”! (more like a parody). The first sex scene is accompanied by voice-over commentary from people interviewed on the street about their views on censorship, which could be seen as “the Girodias touch,” given that he has faced censorship his entire life as a publisher of “dirty books” (but also of Henry Miller, Vladimir Nabokov, William Burroughs…). An unconventional film overall!
