Plot Summary
Based on the mid-eighteenth century novel by Cao Xueqin, Beijing’s CCTV’s version of “A Dream in Red Mansions” (aka Dream of the Red Chamber) is known by many to be the ultimate and best adaptation of the story either on TV or film. It is a story about the tragic love of Jia Baoyu and Lin Daiyu, and the prosperity and decline of the four notable feudal ruling-class families of Jia, Shi, Wang and Xue. Daiyu is a beautiful and talented girl, but prone to ill health. The intelligent and carefree Baoyu, nonetheless, shows love toward her over the years and puts up with her sensitivity and ill-tempered personality. They, along with their family-favored and tactful cousin Xue Baochai, reside in the Grand View Garden. The garden was built to honor the visit of Baoyu’s sister, Imperial Consort Jia Yuanchun, whose installment marked the height of the families’ status, prosperity and power. This story also gives praise to the work and revolts of the many servants and nurses in the Grand View Garden. With its beautiful scenery, solid cast ensemble, haunting and superb music score and elegant songs, “A Dream in Red Mansions” remains one of the most beloved and popular Chinese TV-series.

Reception and soundtrack
The 1987 series was initially somewhat controversial as few Redologists believed a TV adaptation could do the novel full justice. Producer and director Wang Fulin’s decision in employing non-professional youths was vindicated as the TV series gained enormous popularity in China.

The series’ success owes much to composer Wang Liping (王立平). He set many of the novel’s classical verses to music, taking as long as four years to deliberate and complete his compositions.

This really is a very important TV series and we are lucky to have it. There is one question I have and a note about 2 episodes.

1. The series appears to be 36 episodes, not just 35 (the number of the videos above). This can be seen from (1) the .srt English subtitles contained above. The 36th episode is called “A Vast and White Expanse of Immense Universe”; (2) The IMDb link you post also has 36 episodes (the site transliterates the title of the 36th episode as “Bai mang mang hou di gao tian”, which you can see here: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2061162/reference/?ref_=ttep_ep_36); (3) Wikipedia article on this TV series states that the series has 36 episodes and links to a Chinese source and shows the English/Chinese title as “A Vast and White Expanse of Immerse Universe (白茫茫厚地高天),” see here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dream_of_the_Red_Chamber_(1987_TV_series).

Is it possible for you to find the 36th episode?

2. The links to Episodes 10 and 18 are dead. Could they be restored?
