Synopsis
Serap, a young actress with a strong, lively personality and a special dislike for middle-class family life, takes part in a TV-commercial for a recently marketed shampoo, “Belinda”. She plays the role of a typical housewife called Naciye.

What if you wake up one day only to find out that you have become everything you ideologically despise? Atıf Yılmaz’s bittersweet masterpiece, which combines social commentary with surrealist comedy, both subverts the values of consumer society and the social roles attributed to women.

Among those who made interesting women’s films in the 1980s, and in the centre of the controversy about a feminist cinema, was Atıf Yılmaz. “A Divorced Woman” is one of those films about a woman who in the past had no other role but being a pretty ornament and sex object. She discovers her new sexuality with another woman. And adaptation of Necati Cumalı´s story by the same name (note: his play “bir sabah gülerek uyan”), about a woman who frees herself from male-dominated conventions.

In Turkish society the position of a divorced woman is precarious, she´s subject to sexual and economic pressures. She finds solidarity among other women and sexual fulfillment in a new love affair. Most parts of the film were shot in Muğla and Bodrum. Suna (Müjde Ar) and Ayla (Nur Sürer) leave their past behind, including their former men, lovers and husbands, and walk out of the last frame hand in hand. The beautiful scenery of Bodrum is intertwined with liberated physicality.

80’li yıllarla birlikte birbirinden ilginç kadın filmleri çeken Atıf Yılmaz feminist sinema tartışmalarının da odağı olmuştur. Dul Bir Kadın da bu filmlerden biridir ve sosyal çevresi tarafından bir et, bir süs eşyası olarak algılanan bir kadının (Müjde Ar) yeni cinsel arayışlarını ve hemcinsiyle olan cinsel temaslarını konu edinir. Necati Cumalı’nın aynı isimli yapıtından uyarlanan film eril düzenden koparak kendi bireysel ve özgür kimliğini oluşturan kadınların filmidir.

Türk sosyetesi içinde dul bir kadın olmanın teşkil ettiği yer, kadın-erkek ilişkilerinin kırılgan doğası ve şiddetli geçimsizlikler, kadın kadına dostluk ve cinsel aşk gibi konuların çevresinde dönen filmin büyük bir bölümü Muğla, Bodrum’da çekilmiştir. Suna (Müjde Ar) ve Ayla (Nur Sürer) geçmişlerindeki bütün erkekleri geride bırakarak el ele sahneyi terk ederler. Bodrum’un güzelliği onların bedenlerinin özgür salınışıyla iç içe betimlenir.
