A poet is hired by the owner of a wax museum in a circus to write tales about Harun al Raschid, Ivan the Terrible and Jack the Ripper. While writing, the poet and the daughter of the owner, Eva, fantasize the fantastic stories and fall in love for each other.

Circus and variety films were a popular genre in the silent film era. This was Robert Reinert’s last film collaboration; he died before the production was finished. It tells the story of a clown who hides his identity while courting a young female artist. The atmospheric sets by Robert Herlth and Walter Röhrig, the masterful direction by Arthur Robison, and especially the dramatic performance by Werner Krauss raise the film considerably over other works in the genre. The elaborate digital restoration by the Munich Film Museum displays the film’s visual beauty.

Can it be possible that people are so impressed with circus films? Here is another, and the theme is one we know inside out, backwards, forwards, and upside down. Nevertheless, Robison has managed to give us a film which – story apart – is able to hold our attention, and now and then our admiration. Werner Krauss, for once acting straight and not in character, has never been better. His role as clown is hardly important, and does not matter. It is the Krauss behind the clown, the – so to speak, ache behind the smile, that matters. He has insuperable suavity, a charming worldliness. And power. There is no one false gesture, not one over emphasis, not even one moment where the triviality of what he has to do seems trivial, for he has succeeded in giving a profound character study, which in itself and unrelated to other incident could not be bettered. Jenny Jugo has great quality, and is convincing and consistent in the part of a sullen, stupid girl. Her sullenness is very adroitly conveyed through her various flirtations, and the entirely meretricious character is drawn with exactitude and good balance. The photography, the lighting are good, and the technique brisk and convincing.

English doctor Professor Gesellius is in China researching the effects of opium. He frees a young woman named Sin from a den of inequity run by Nung Chiang. When he sails for home with the girl, Chiang swears vengeance. In England, it emerges that Sin is the illegitimate daughter of one of Gesellius’ colleagues, whose son is having an affair with the doctor’s wife. The son is poisoned and Gesellius becomes a murder suspect. He flees to India with Sin, pursued by the vengeful Nung Chiang … Made during a censorship-free period, Opium combined the thrill of the exotic with the titillation of the erotic; scenes of opium intoxication resemble the satyr play of Max Reinhardt’s Die Insel der Seligen (Isle of Bliss, 1913). But “under the surface, Opium captures the experience and shock of World War I. […] Reinert and his cameraman Helmar Lerski developed a brilliant, hallucinatory cinematic language”. (Tobias Nagl) – This colour reconstruction was based on nitrate source elements from the film museums in Munich and Düsseldorf, and the Austrian Film Archive. At a length equivalent to 2,150 metres of celluloid, this is closer to the original release than any version known to have survived.

Francis, a young man, recalls in his memory the horrible experiences he and his fiancée Jane recently went through. It is the annual fair in Holstenwall. Francis and his friend Alan visit The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, an exhibit where the mysterious doctor shows the somnambulist Cesare, and awakens him for some moments from his death-like sleep. When Alan asks Cesare about his future, Cesare answers that he will die before dawn. The next morning Alan is found dead. Francis suspects Cesare of being the murderer, and starts spying on him and Dr. Caligari. The following night Cesare is going to stab Jane in her bed, but softens when he sees the beautiful woman, and instead of committing another murder, he abducts her. Jane’s father awakens because of the noise, and he and some servants follow the fleeing Cesare. When Cesare cannot outrun his pursuers anymore, he gently places Jane down on the ground, and runs away. Francis and the police investigate the caravan of Dr. Caligari, but the doctor succeeds in slipping away. Francis pursues the fleeing Dr. Caligari, and sees him disappear into a madhouse. Francis enters the madhouse, where he is sure he will find the truth behind all these mysterious events.
