The film follows the adventures of a group of regulars at Nick’s ‘Pacific Street Saloon, Restaurant and Entertainment Palace’ in San Francisco. A sign outside tells people to come in as they are. At the center is the wealthy Joe (James Cagney), who has given up working to hold court at Nick’s (William Bendix) bar. He desires to live “a civilized life” without hurting anyone and believes the real truth in people is found in their dreams of themselves, not the hard facts of their actual existence.[4] Joe has a stooge named Tom (Wayne Morris), who runs his eccentric errands until a woman with a past named Kitty (Jeanne Cagney) comes in and steals Tom’s heart. Also appearing are Broderick Crawford as Krupp, Ward Bond as McCarthy, Tom Powers as Blick, and James Barton as Kit Carson.

Want to see a really rad heist? Pick up a copy of Plunder Road and watch the first 15 minutes. Wet roads. Heavy rainfall. Nervous men in trucks. They are carrying something explosive. A train approaches and a meticulously executed robbery ensues. Now you want to check out the rest too. You should, it has only 72 minutes on the clock. The men have a sound plan, they are methodical. Some are nervous, others cold as ice. They split up. Three trucks on their way to the border, facing one roadblock after the other.

Will they make it? A simple and thus effective plot, the shady night photography is gorgeous. There’s a heartbreaking scene at a gas station, the last getaway car is brilliant and you’ll never guess the femme fatale. This made me think of certain French classics I love. Like Henri-Georges Clouzot’s The Wages of Fear, Jean-Pierre Melville’s crime films and Jules Dassin’s Rififi. This may be raising the bar a little too high, but it certainly is a little gem in the noir catalogue. And it should rank high in any heist list.

Johnny One-Eye was adapted from one of Damon Runyon’s lesser-known stories. Pat O’Brien and Wayne Morris star as Martin Martin and Dane Cory respectively, former partners in crime who have long since split up. When a new district attorney puts the heat on, Cory, anxious to save his own hide, accuses Martin of an unsolved murder. Holed up in abandoned house, Martin is befriended by a little girl (Gayle Reed) and her dog. It so happens that the girl is the daughter of the crusading DA, and thereby hangs the rest of this tale. Produced by Benedict Bogeaus, Johnny One-Eye co-stars Bogeaus’ wife Dolores Moran as a moll named Lily White.
