John, an American pilot crashes in France and must get to the underground before the Nazis can capture him. He is helped by a naive young nun Sister Clothilde who, despite her calling to the Lord and the fact that John is happily married, falls in love with the stranded pilot. Once they hook up with the underground, she agrees to pose as his “wife” so that he may transport secret documents from the French freedom fighters to London. In the end, Sister Clothilde sacrifices herself to save John and is captured by the Nazis, who plan to ship her off to a German whorehouse for active duty. Rather than see her suffer a fate worse than death, French Mayor Vitrey kills Sister Clothilde.

Quote:
Based on Herman Bang’s 1902 novel of the same name, Dreyer’s film is a fascinating fin-de-siècle study of a “decadent” elderly artist (Benjamin Christensen) driven to despair by his relationship with his young protégé and former model, Michael (Walter Slezak). With suffocatingly sumptuous production design by renowned architect Hugo Häring (his only film work), this Kammerspiel, or “intimate theatre”, foreshadows Dreyer’s magnificent final film Gertrud, by forty years with its “Now I may die content, for I have seen great love” epigraph.

Michael was scripted by Dreyer with Fritz Lang’s wife, Thea von Harbou (Metropolis, M, etc). It stars the director Benjamin Christensen (Häxan); Walter Slezak (Hitchcock’s Lifeboat); Nora Gregor (Renoir’s The Rules of the Game); Mady Christians (Ophüls’ Letter from an Unknown Woman); and Karl Freund (who also shot Metropolis) in his only ever appearance as an actor. Freund lensed most of Michael too, but left to work on Murnau’s The Last Laugh, and Rudolph Maté (The Passion of Joan of Arc) took over.

Several survivors of a torpedoed ship find themselves in the same boat with one of the men who sunk it.
In the Atlantic during WWII, a ship and a German U-boat are involved in a battle and both are sunk. The survivors from the ship gather in one of the boats. They are from a variety of backgrounds: an international journalist, a rich businessman, the radio operator, a nurse, a steward, a sailor and an engineer with communist tendencies. Trouble starts when they pull a man out of the water who turns out to be from the U-boat.
_______________________________________________________________________________
Part mystery, part wartime polemic, Lifeboat finds director Alfred Hitchcock tackling a cinematic challenge that foreshadows the self-imposed handicaps of Rope and Rear Window. As with those subsequent features, Hitchcock confines his action and characters to a single set, in this instance the lone surviving lifeboat from an Allied freighter sunk by a German U-boat in the North Atlantic. A less confident, ingenious filmmaker might have opened up John Steinbeck’s dialogue-driven character study beyond the battered boat and its cargo of survivors, but Hitchcock instead revels in his predicament to exploit the enforced intimacy between his characters.
Indeed, we never actually see the doomed freighter–the smoking ship’s funnel beneath the credits simply sinks beneath the waves, and we’re plunged into the escalating tensions between those who gradually find their way to the boat, a band of eight English and American passengers and crew, plus a German sailor (Walter Slezak) rescued from the U-boat, itself destroyed by the freighter’s deck gun. Heading the cast and inevitably commanding their and our attention is the cello-voiced Tallulah Bankhead as Connie Porter, a cynical, sophisticated writer whose priorities seem to be hanging onto her mink and keeping her lipstick fresh. Gradually, the others find Porter and her lifeboat, forming a temporary community that inevitably suggests a careful cross section of archetypes, from wealthy industrialist (Henry Hull) to ship’s boiler men (John Hodiak and William Bendix).

Review:
Out of a bizarre idea, RKO has produced a strange and restless melodrama that opened yesterday at the Palace under the title of “The Fallen Sparrow.” As the story of an extraordinary conflict between a group of Nazi agents and a onetime Spanish Loyalist volunteer whose sanity has been wrenched by their tortures, it is a far-from-flawless film. The issue upon which the motivation rests seems odd and dubious, and the film all too often wanders into a bewildering labyrinth of devious and intersecting plots But by virtue of a taut performance by John Garfield in the central role, and the singular skill with which director Richard Wallace has highlighted the significant climaxes, “The Fallen Sparrow” emerges as one of the uncommon and provocatively handled melodramas of recent months.

The pawn is nothing more than a battle flag from the Spanish war. The German espionage must get it to salve the pride of the man in Berlin, one of whose comrades of the beer-hall putsch had been killed by members of the volunteer’s brigade. Through two years of torture in a Spanish dungeon, the volunteer has refused to give up the flag. Allowed to escape, he tries to regain a measure of mental stability in a sanatorium, then returns to New York in search of the Nazi “with the lagging step” whose footstep had always been the signal for new tortures. The Nazi, likewise, has pursued the soldier. And after a rather confused game of cat-and-mouse in which psychology, hokum and drugs are used as weapons, the pair finally confront each other.

What lifts the film above the merely far-fetched and macabre is largely the skill with which Director Wallace has used both soundtrack and camera to suggest the stresses upon the volunteer’s fear-drenched mind. A street lamp shining through a fire escape throws a lattice across a sweating face; in a shadowy room, the remembered footsteps mingle with the tinkle of a bell and become the sound of dripping water from a leaking faucet. And again, when the climax is being quietly prepared at a refugee gathering in a mansion, the strident strains and swirling skirts of a gypsy dance brush momentarily across the silence between the warring opponents.

Through these scenes and others Mr. Garfield remains almost constantly convincing and without his sure and responsive performance in a difficult role Mr. Wallace’s effects would have been lost entirely. Maureen O’Hara, strong in the highly keyed moments, is wooden in the less hectic moments. Walter Slezak makes a reasonably deceptive menace, and the other roles are handled capably.
