Rachel is 40 years old, single and has no children. She is working as a teacher at a middle school, and has a large circle of friends and also keeps in touch with her ex-husbands. She also takes guitar lessons and is happy with her life. Then one day, she falls in love with Ali and his four-year-old daughter Leila also enters her life. Rachel takes care of the toddler, cares for and soon loves it like her own. But she must recognize that the close bond with Leila also harbors a possible risk, especially in relation to her birth mother Alice. Rachel doesn’t want to put up with just being an “extra” in Leila’s life. Time is also working against her, should she still fulfill her wish to have a child of her own at this age.

Acclaimed writer-director Rebecca Zlotowski (An Easy Girl, Rendez-Vous 2020) draws from her own life to depict the emotional trajectory of Rachel (Virginie Efira), a schoolteacher whose desire for a biological child seems increasingly unlikely to be fulfilled (as she’s informed by her gynecologist in a delightful cameo from Frederick Wiseman). When Rachel enters into a relationship with car designer Ali (Roschdy Zem), he’s slow to let her know that he’s a single father, but once she finds out she quickly grows to love his precocious daughter, Leila (Callie Ferreira-Goncalves). The stresses and strains of close relationships between adults and children are thoughtfully examined in this drama that’s as romantic in its evocation of new love blossoming in Paris as it is clear-headed about the myriad pressures that societal expectations impose on the lives of middle-aged women.

Quote:
Perhaps what’s most refreshing about actor/writer/director Emmanuel Mouret’s latest effort Caprice is how equally unlikely it presents the maddening scenario of a nebbish male romantic lead courted aggressively by two incredibly attractive women. A lighter, Gallic equivalent of the type of masculine steered ménage a trois we’ve grown accustomed from Woody Allen, this treatment manages to feel equally effortless but not entirely effervescent. A series of coincidences sets off a sexual comedy of errors involving a quartet of enjoyable performers, though all is eventually for naught since none of them are exactly likeable, a problem considering they’re trapped in a romantic comedy paradigm necessitating we grow interested or even attached to at least one of their outcomes.

Clement (Mouret) is a shy, unassuming fifth grade school teacher, divorced and sharing joint custody of his preadolescent son. He’s an avid theater attendee, and his handsome features have attracted the attentions of a young woman, Caprice (Anais Demoustier), who seems to keep seeing the same shows. But a chance meeting with lauded film and theater star Alicia (Virginie Efren) finds Clement eager to court the blonde beauty, who responds in kind. But Clement’s boss and best friend Thomas (Laurent Stocker) also lusts for Alicia, and when Clement shares a drunken interlude with Caprice after he’s begun dating Alicia, matters get complicated quickly.

Mouret, who’s been starring in his own features since his 2000 debut Laissons Lucie faire!, is probably best known to English speaking arthouse crowds for 2007’s Shall We Kiss?, which co-starred Virginie Ledoyen in a narrative concerned with the consequences of one’s romantic attachments on the other person. This time around, Mouret navigates more familiar territory, depending on the comedic energy made possible when an unlikely male finds himself involved with a beautiful, highly sought after woman (weirdly recalling Mighty Aphrodite, even though Efira is an actress and not a prostitute), who believes she is destined to find love with any man not in her profession based on the advice of a psychic. Of course, this is bizarrely complicated by Alicia’s attraction to Clement’s boss, an even more dubious Laurent Stocker, and the eventual return to the narrative of the titular Caprice.

What’s perhaps most problematic about Mouret’s scenario is the rather tragic denouement of its melancholy, eponymous character, an ingénue who’s yet to discover her own self-worth, fixating on a man she believes to be her intellectual or professional superior. Demoustier remains the most transfixing onscreen personality, but we’re not led to understand anything about her beyond this eventually annoying obsession with a dry, insistently dull fifth grade teacher. In many ways, her performance recalls an aggressive version of the character portrayed by Isabelle Huppert in her 1977 breakout role, The Lacemaker from Claude Goretta, but Mouret strays clear of despair with a truncated finale and a convenient fix for all involved.

Virginie Efira, reminiscent here of a self-involved role we’d expect to see played by Katherine Heigl in an English language version, is unable to establish chemistry with either Mouret or Stocker. Worse, Alicia is a vain, unlikeable creature, as self-obsessed as Caprice is self-effacing, but why either of these two women would convince themselves of their attraction to Clement is where Caprice fails (not to mention a strange lack of screen time between Clement and the son he has from another marriage).

Though its poster art screams Vicky Cristina Barcelona, Mouret’s Caprice is a less enthusiastic derivative of Allen’s usual predicaments with Eros, and, sans Demoustier, a bit too one dimensional to warrant more than superficial comparison.

Quote:
The title character in Sibyl (Viginie Efira) weaves herself a web of bedlam, not admitting that she has ensnared herself for the majority of the film. Her toxicity spills over into people’s lives. By willfully absorbing other people’s lives and allowing their troubles to fester her long existing issues, she’s in for a mess. Not to mention, said people ensnared in her web had already weaved their own toxic webs, now tangling in hers.

French psychotherapist Sibyl is setting off to write her book. One day, she receives a call from the tear-stricken Margot (Adèle Exarchopoulos), an up-and-coming movie star in the midst of a difficult decision: She’s deciding whether to abort her pregnancy, a result of an affair with her famous costar, Igor (Gaspard Ulliel) before a film shoot. Not to mention, Igor has been in a long-term relationship with said film’s director (Sandra Hüller).

Sibyl does the unthinkable and commits an ethics breach: She provides therapy to Margot but records their conversation and transforms Margot’s story into soap operatic beats for her fiction. Margot’s story is too enticing to Sibyl, not to mention it seems to resemble Sibyl’s own relationship woes. Soon, Margot’s emotional needs surges. The patient is unsure what decision she needs validated and Sibyl uneasily tries to guide Margot’s heart. But Sibyl becomes swept into a chaos so maddening that it exacerbates Sibyl’s angst over a past relationship and her alcoholism.

Hilariously, matters escalate to the point where Sibyl is summoned to Margot’s film shoot and assumes the role of an unofficial on-set therapist, directing Margot, even having to sing and direct a romantic scene between two estranged co-stars. How Sibyl is whisked into those scenarios sound inexplicable on paper yet are believable due to director Justine Triet’s staging—and anyone who has been on a film shoot can recognize these on-set desperation rings true.

Triet’s direction humanizes its female players in their overwrought outbreaks. Exarchopoulos is the rawest and reddest in Margot’s anguish. But special mention goes to Huller, with a smug Cate Blanchett mien, who steals every scene as a prima donna director whose soul has been sucked due to the personal mess, her sanity waning by the hour. She seethes with contempt as she furnishes her wavering commitment, ordering her players around, bewildered by the revelation of her relationship betrayal. He inexplicable rationale of enabling her boyfriend’s affair with his co-star is a riotous piece of dialogue, not just because of the denial but because it’s alarmingly believable in how someone might try to consolidate that which cannot be consolidated.

Sibyl renders itself a funny-to-riotous-to-heartwrenching viewing experience. Across rib-cracking production nightmares, eroticism, and drab sessions of Sibyl counseling a child, and breakdowns, sometimes the movie tries to assemble fragments that don’t tonally gel. Overall, Sibyl is a tense portrait of a woman who can no longer fake dignity or functionality. By the end, Sibyl completes her project but still has to live with the shatterings that can’t be reassemble.
