A lonely princess and a poor cobbler fall in love while trying to retrieve three magical orbs that were stolen by a bumbling thief, all while outwitting a powerful sorcerer as adventure and comedic pop culture references abound.

Acclaimed master animator Richard Williams spent the better part of three decades working on what was to be his masterpiece, The Thief and the Cobbler.

After his stunning success as animation director on Who Framed Roger Rabbit he was finally able to get studio financing to take The Thief from being a career spanning side project to full-blown production. A stolid perfectionist, costs mounted and deadlines loomed with Williams at the helm, and Warners eventually pulled out after Disney announced the similarly themed Aladdin.

With funding gone, the film was taken from Williams by his creditors and was completed by others, cheaply and poorly while making massive changes to try to make it more mainstream, and only saw release in Australia and South Africa as The Princess and the Cobbler. Eventually Disney bought it and heavily edited it again, in such a way as to make it appear a cheap knockoff of Aladdin (instead of the film that’s largely credited by animators as the greatest inspiration behind Disney’s film), while making it almost unwatchable in the process. Released as Arabian Knights, it was a travesty.

This Recobbed Cut is a recent fan-created reconstruction of the film as Williams wanted it, or as close to as possible based on a work print of the film from when Williams was nearing completion and shortly before having the film taken away from him. Using the workprint, DVDs of the two officially released cuts of the film, and other related elements taken from various sources, this Recobbed Cut reveals the masterpiece that could have been, and the single greatest tragedy of professional animation in the past twenty years.

Synopsis:

City Under the Sea (released as War-Gods of the Deep in the US) is a 1965 British-American adventure horror science fiction film. It was directed by Jacques Tourneur (his final film) and starred Vincent Price, Tab Hunter, Susan Hart and David Tomlinson.

The plot concerns the discovery of a lost city beneath the sea off the coast of Cornwall. Price is the captain overseeing a group of sailors who have lived there for more than a century where the peculiar mix of gases has allowed them to extend their lifespan.

The film was a period fantasy in the manner begun with Disney’s 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1954). The film attempted to capitalize on the series of Edgar Allan Poe films that had been made by Roger Corman, starring Price. To this extent the film took the title of a Poe poem, “The City in the Sea”, and attempted to exploit the Poe films’ trend, even though the plot is only loosely based on the poem, with a recitation of the poem at the beginning of the film and a brief reprise at the end.
