Weird as hell but strangely compelling, Davide Manuli’s The Legend of Kaspar Hauser reenvisions the German youth’s story as a fable existing outside any recognizable reality and revolving around magic, dope, and thumping dance music. With Vincent Gallo hamming his way through not one but two roles, the cult-courting film will be catnip for Gallomaniacs. But the real star is Silvia Calderoni, a stage actress making her apparent film debut in the title role.

Shot in B&W on the isle of Sardinia, Legend offers a stark, out-of-time village whose many age-old buildings are inhabited by just a half-dozen characters. Gallo plays two: a constantly muttering Sheriff, with stringy blonde hair and a short fuse, and The Pusher, an enigma dressed in all-white motorcycle gear whose role in the community is not explained beyond his name.

The mysterious Hauser (referred to as a boy, though played by a flat-chested woman) washes up on the beach, almost dead, with big headphones on his ears and his name emblazoned on his naked torso. The Sheriff, who somehow anticipated Kaspar’s arrival, brings the boy home and teaches him tricks: juggling oranges, for instance, and DJing. (For the island’s “Duchess,” Kaspar bangs his head against the wall repeatedly. “He’s very talented,” she declares. “Yeah, he’s a special boy,” the Sheriff replies.) At all times, Kaspar’s headphones remain on — connected to no music source, though the boy contorts to the beat of unheard dancefloor rhythms.

Using disconnected scenes to sketch out a just-barely-comprehensible narrative, Manuli delights in weird moments that sometimes play as parodies of ’60s art and ’70s cult cinema (complete with a strangely disfigured man playing the local priest’s servant boy) and often seem intended solely for chemically-altered midnight audiences. Few sequences try the skeptical viewer’s patience, though, and many entertain in their own way — while Gallo lays his performance on thick, he’s frequently upstaged by Calderoni’s singular, beat-of-another-drummer physical presence.

Just don’t ask what any of it — especially bookending shots in which Gallo does Saturday Night Fever moves while UFOs zoom overhead — means. – The Hollywood Reporter

An angry young man goes to Europe to find his father, a ’60s radical turned doctor in exile.

Doc lives on the edge of Europe where it imperceptibly slides over into the Third World. As a doctor, he knows that the illness he has contracted ten years before in war-torn Africa is getting worse. The diagnosis is cholera, but Doc Knows the disease’s real name: despair. His thoughts about his failed struggle for justice and ideals are drowned regularly in alcohol. On the other side of the world lives Jimmy, a speed-loving motorbike freak who, when his mother dies, finds a letter from Doc and discovers that his father, whom he thought was dead, is still alive. The encounter of the two men leads to a reappraisal of two worlds in opposition.

The week of his 18th birthday, Bennie, who’s a waiter on a cruise ship, has a layover in Buenos Aires. He seeks out his older brother, Tetro, whom he hasn’t seen in years. Tetro, who lives with Miranda, is a burned-out case; he’s hot and cold toward his brother, introducing him as a “friend,” refusing to talk about their family, telling Bennie not to tell Miranda who their father is. Thoughts of their father cast a shadow over both brothers. Who is he, and what past has Tetro left behind? Bennie finds pages of Tetro’s unfinished novel, and he pushes both to know his own history and to become a part of his brother’s life again. What can come of Bennie’s pushing?

A pair of American security operatives (Zach Cohen and Iftach Ofir) are on patrol in Afghanistan when they stumble upon a Taliban fighter (Vincent Gallo), who kills them despite his terror and nervousness. While trying to escape, the Afghan is captured by American forces; he’s tortured during interrogation, but doesn’t tell the Americans anything, in part because an explosion has made it difficult for him to hear what they’re saying. The Americans ship the Afghan off to a detention facility with a number of other Taliban soldiers, but upon arrival he’s able to escape. However, the Afghan finds himself in a forbidding snowbound climate, and with no provisions or warm clothing he struggles to simply survive as he avoids his pursuers and struggles to find some way to get home.

MUBI wrote:
Essential Killing, Jerzy Skolimowski’s exercise in pure filmmaking, begins with a helicopter shot following three US soldiers on patrol. The parched, desert-like landscape, riven by gullies and canyons, could be Iraq or Afghanistan. They are on the hunt for the enemy, and soon find him. Portrayed by Vincent Gallo, he is a tribal soldier, bearded with a turban, who could be Taliban or Al Queda. What follows is a struggle for survival that can also be read as a desperate fight for freedom, and Skolimowski is very careful to avoid any prescriptive interpretation of his narrative.

No one is named in Essential Killing and there is virtually no dialogue as we follow the capture, incarceration and interrogation of a “terrorist,” who is swept into a military system that controls his every moment. Hooded and shackled, stripped of his clothes and clad in bright orange prisoner overalls, he is shaved, questioned, tortured and beaten before being transported by plane to an unknown destination – which could not provide a greater contrast to his native environment. It is winter, snow is everywhere and the landscape is immense.

After making his escape in a moment of confusion, the rest of the film follows his trek into the snow-clad forests, pursued by helicopters, soldiers and dogs. With no food or water, his journey is one of sheer survival and a spirited bid for freedom. Skolimowski follows the grim, often surprising and occasionally hallucinatory adventures of a man who refuses to die or give up. It could well be a parable of what NATO is confronting in the grim struggle for Afghanistan.

Skolimowski’s visual imagination is stretched to the fullest, with the sheer magnificence of the landscape providing a beautiful, silent backdrop to the character’s heroic battle to stay alive. In a harrowing performance that must have been immensely physically demanding role, Gallo conveys reservoirs of courage and determination without uttering a single word.
