Julia runs a trendy bar in Barcelona. She treats men with caution, believing one can love too much and invite pain. She’s been dating Pablo, one of her waiters. After his grisly murder (his heart is cut out), she receives anonymous messages and video tapes from a man who says he is in love with her. Another murder follows, the police give her 24-hour protection, and Pablo’s replacement at the bar, the virile Antonio, seems to be attracted to her. As Julia’s stalker closes in, she’s on the verge of a nervous breakdown, then becomes almost serene. Leading the investigation is a police comisario who’s eyes are covered as he awaits the completion of treatment. Will we see the murderer?

The Argentinian Lisandro Alonso, with the poet Fabian Casas, wrote a story about ‘Jauja’, an earthly paradise sought in vain for centuries because everyone who looked for it got lost on the way. In this case, it’s about the Danish captain/fortune hunter Dinessen (Danish-born, reluctant Hollywood star Viggo Mortensen) who, at the end of the 19th century, joined the Argentine infantry with his 14-year-old daughter Inge. When she runs off with a young soldier, Dinessen endlessly roams the pampas of Patagonia on the trail of a very thin dog.
The stunningly photographed Jauja is both incomparable and intriguing. It’s no surprise that Mortensen, who also produced this ‘road movie’ and made the music, describes Alonso as a contemporary Tarkovsky.
Jauja, shot in 4:3 and co-produced by the Dutch Ilse Hughan, received the film critics’ best film award for the Un Certain Regard section at the Cannes Festival.

Description: David Cronenberg directed this screen adaptation of a graphic novel by John Wagner and Vince Locke which explores how an act of heroism unexpectedly changes a man’s life. Tom Stall (Viggo Mortensen) lives a quiet life in a small Indiana town, running the local diner with his wife, Edie (Maria Bello), and raising their two children. But the quiet is shattered one day when a pair of criminals on the run from the police walk into his diner just before closing time. After they attack one of the customers and seem ready to kill several of the people inside, Tom jumps to the fore, grabbing a gun from one of the criminals and killing the invaders. Tom is immediately hailed as a hero by his employees and the community at large, but Tom seems less than comfortable with his new notoriety. One day, a man with severe facial scars, Carl Fogarty (Ed Harris), sits down at the counter and begins addressing Tom as Joey, and begins asking him questions about the old days in Philadelphia. While Tom seems puzzled, Carl’s actions suggest that the quiet man pouring coffee at the diner may have a dark and violent past he isn’t eager to share with others — as well as some old scores that haven’t been settled.
