The rioting that erupted in 1948 following the assassination of a popular Colombian presidential candidate forms an ever-present background for this drama. In the story, Santiago and his wife Josefina have been confined to their Bogota apartment by the chaos in the streets, which is growing progressively worse. To pass the time, and take her mind off the events outside, Josefina bakes a birthday cake for Laura, a single woman living in an apartment across the street. A young model runs away from the set of a commercial spot she’s filming, and enter the mansion of Araucaima, where its dwellers indulge in strange rites.

Filled with symbolism, this metaphorical drama by Colombian director Carlos Mayolo is centered on an old mansion, isolated and ambiguous in its actual location. Revolving around the mansion is a static society made up of a pilot, landowner, priest, soldier, and other people representative of professions or occupations. This group is sustained by a kind of “earth mother” named Machiche (Vicky Hernandez) and has retained its status quo for a long time.
