Storyline
In 1854, the patriarch Patrick O’Leary of the O’Leary family dies in an accident nearby Chicago while traveling amid-western prairie. His wife Molly O’Leary raises her three sons alone working as laundress. Her son Jack becomes an idealistic lawyer; Dion is a gambler; and Bob helps his mother in the laundry business and marries local Gretchen (June Storey) in the old area known as The Patch. Dion meets the singer Belle Fawcett in the cabaret owned by Gil Warren and they fall in love with each other and become lovers. They also open a business of their own to compete with Gil that becomes their enemy. However Gil invites Dion to join the politics with him but Dion plots a scheme with tragic consequences.

John Ford returned to his Irish roots in this lighthearted gem featuring three short films introduced by Tyrone Power and shot entirely in Ireland.

The first, “The Majesty of the Law”, is the droll tale of a police inspector (Cyril Cusack) trying to serve a warrant on an old man (Noel Purcell) who assaulted his neighbour.

“A Minute’s Wait” tells the farcical story of how a train’s one-minute station stop turns into a two-hour delay. Filmed on the late, lamented West Clare Railway.

The final episode, “1921”, stars Dublin’s famed Abbey Theatre Players in a drama inspired by Lady Gregory’s celebrated one-act play The Rising of the Moon, in which two bogus nuns attempt to save an imprisoned patriot (Donal Donnelly) from hanging.

One of the most personal films he ever made, The Rising of the Moon was Ford’s attempt to promote filmmaking in Ireland. He later remarked that he directed the picture “just for fun, and enjoyed it very much.”

Synopsis:
Well-to-do Chicagoan, Larry Darrell, breaks off his engagement to Isabel and travels the world seeking enlightenment, eventually finding his guru India. Isabel marries Gray, and following the crash of 1929, is invited to live in Paris with her rich, social climbing, Uncle Elliot. During a sojurn there, Larry, having attained his goal, is reunited with Isabel. While slumming one night Larry, Isabel and company are shocked to discover Sophie, a friend from Chicago. Having lost her husband and child in a tragic accident, Sophie is living the low-life with the help of drugs and an abusive brute. Larry tries to rehabilitate her, but his efforts are sabotaged by Isabel who has tried in vain to reignite Larry’s interest in her.

Plot Summary
Martin “Marty” Maher, an immigrant from Ireland, arrives at West Point where he is assigned to work in the kitchen. He soon proves to be ill-suited to such work and quits only to enlist in the army. The head of the West Point athletics department, Captain Koehler (known as the Master of the Sword), takes Marty on as an assistant. Marty proves to be no great specimen of a sports expert, but he has a winning way about him in dealing with the cadets, whether it’s boxing, swimming or football.

Early in his time at West Point, he meets Mary O’Donnell who has come to work for Captain Koehler and his wife. After an exasperating period of courtship for Marty, Mary agrees to marry him and the two move into a house on the Academy grounds. Money is tight on a sergeant’s pay and Marty frequently threatens to leave the army, but something always happens that prevents him from doing so or changes his mind for him. Marty and Mary are eventually joined by Marty’s father and brother whom Mary has arranged to bring over to America from Ireland. The couple soon becomes well-loved and respected by the succession of cadets (including the likes of Dwight Eisenhower) that pass through West Point. Tyrone Power pursues Betty Grable and becomes A YANK IN THE R.A.F., in this romantic drama set in the early days of WWII. For smooth-talking daredevil pilot Tim Baker (Power), flying is a game and the war is simply an opportunity to make some quick money. When a high-paying job ferrying bombers across the Atlantic lands him in London, he runs into Carol (Grable), an old flame, and joins the R.A.F. just to be near her. But problems arise when Carol is pursued by another pilot (John Sutton), who treats her better and happens to be Baker’s superior officer! When both men start flying bombing missions over Europe, Carol finds that choosing between them is suprisingly hard, and Baker learns that not everyone takes life as lightly as he does.

Tyrone Power is the quintessential American abroad, a brash, smart-talking flyboy with a roving eye and a mercenary heart–in other words, a part made for him. “I know, I’m a worm,” he smiles as he plants a kiss on Betty Grable, the American showgirl who can’t seem to stay mad at the charming cad who enlists in the RAF just to impress her. The marvelous special-effects model work delivers two excellent airborne sequences (a harrowing bombing run over Germany and a swarming dogfight over the evacuation of Dunkirk), but as military melodrama it’s ultimately pure Hollywood fluff and only halfhearted propaganda. A Yank in the RAF is less about the war in Europe than about Power’s rakish grin and future GI pin-up Grable’s oft-displayed legs, and they display their charms for all they’re worth. –Sean Axmaker

Hemingway’s crestfallen tale of American expatriates in Europe is faithfully refashioned for the screen in Henry King’s 1957 drama. The Lost Generation’s carousing lifestyles and misguided behavior are depicted much like in the original text, with performances rich in contradiction and nostalgic sentimentality. Leo Tover’s Cinemascope cinematography, elegantly reserved and yet aptly illustrative, imbues a lively atmosphere into the film’s famous Pamplona bullfighting scene, and the screenplay retains much of the distinct syntax and rhythm of Hemingway’s printed dialogue.
