Plot:
Tony Curtis stars as Johnny Dark, a moody automobile designer. Rejected by a major auto firm because of his “radical” notions, Johnny sets out to prove the efficiency of his cars on the racetrack. He is aided and abetted by pretty Piper Laurie and less pretty Paul Kelly, while motor mogul Sidney Blackmer fumes and fusses until he realizes that Johnny’s designs will save his company. Most of the film is devoted to a marathon race, pitting Johnny against his friendly enemy Don Taylor. Johnny Dark is a must for racing buffs, as well as a prime example of Tony Curtis in his beefcake period.

Tony Curtis will amaze and astound you with one of his best performances as Harry Houdini, “the man of 10,000 tricks.” Houdini has nothing up its sleeve, but the charismatic Curtis and Janet Leigh (“Hollywood’s Most Exciting Young Lovers,” proclaims the film’s original trailer, the sole bonus feature on this disc), as Houdini’s wife, Bess, levitate this conventional, albeit enormously entertaining 1953 biopic that follows the legendary magician and escape artist from his days as a sideshow attraction to international stardom. Houdini dedicates his life to giving audiences “bigger and bigger thrills,” and the film’s best scenes recreate Houdini’s act and death-defying escapes, including a harrowing plunge into the frozen Detroit River while locked in a trunk. Houdini’s fate is well-known, and while the film plays loose with the facts, it does conjure up an eerie foreboding by the time he takes the stage for his final, ill-fated Halloween performance. After Houdini’s first strait-jacket escape, an elderly magician urges him, “It’s isn’t a trick. Drop it. It will make you famous, but it will kill you”. Houdini is old fashioned movie magic that’s no trick and all treat.

Young film producer, Monroe Stahr, is a rising star in 1930’s Hollywood due to his ability to get anything he envisions done even if it means breaking a few rules. The latest film he’s working on stars two popular actors, Rodriguez and Didi, and everyone is sure it’ll be a smashing hit when it’s done. The times are changing however, since the first guilds and unions are being formed in Hollywood, but Stahr is still sticking to his old ways of doing things in spite of that. His main opponent becomes a union organizer, Brimmer, but Stahr finds ways to deal with him as well. However, in his hubris, Stahr crosses one red line too many when he falls for a young troubled engaged woman called Kathleen Moore and neglects Cecilia Brady, the young daughter of studio executive and Stahr’s boss, Pat Brady. Pat becomes furious over this as well as Stahr’s other misbehavings and makes it his mission to take Stahr down. Due to all the pressure, Stahr’s health starts failing as well. The film is based on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s last novel The Last Tycoon that was never finished. The character of Monroe Stahr is based on Irving Thalberg, the production chief at the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) film studio during the late 1920’s and 1930’s. The character of Pat Brady is based on Louis B. Mayer himself, the legendary co-founder of MGM.
