Professor Larsen, the director of the International Center for Astro Monitoring is listening to radio transmissions from deep space when he receives a disturbing string of code, that to him heralds the coming of alien invaders. When thousands of people suddenly disappear from the red-light district known as Sepulveda, his worst fears are confirmed. To prove that aliens are behind the mayhem, he is sent there to investigate. Larsen is assisted by his lab helper Oscar, his bodyguard Stavro and by Eva, the beautiful daughter of a politically powerful hermaphrodite named Purpur. Their investigation leads them into a bizarre and seamy futuristic world of eroticism, political intrigue and danger.

“Together with his collaborator, (prominent Australian playwright) Stephen Sewell, Ian Pringle has wisely chosen to avoid the restrictive confines of a birth-to-death biography. They have instead fashioned an involving interior drama, focusing on the final four years of Isabelle Eberhardt’s turbulent existence. This is the period when Isabelle (Mathilda May) returns to North Africa, ostensibly to track down a missing right-wing eccentric, the Marquis de Moyes. Eberhardt operates as a kind of free-roving desert correspondent, outraging authorities both with her published accounts exposing the corruption of the French militia, and also with her rebellious behaviour as an independent, self-styled woman in an exclusively male domain.

Isabelle’s adventures in the field embroil her in adventures of the heart. She encounters Slimene (Tcheky Karo), an Arab foot soldier and the charming, enigmatic Major Lyautey (Peter O’Toole). Torn between commitment to others and the impassioned force of her own headstrong will, Isabelle conducts an intense, internal power struggle. Ultimately, external events prove literally overwhelming in a spectacular and moving finale.

Director’s Note: “Isabelle had a prodigious intellect and wanted to be a writer. She was fluent in five languages and became intoxicated with the Occidental. She found in that a way to escape, a way to freedom. The greatest challenge in writing the script was dealing with a life that was so chaotic. Murder, madness and delirious sexual jealousy in Papua New Guinea. The Proposition director John Hillcoat’s lost 1996 psychodrama, featuring a soundtrack by Nick Cave and Scott Walker

Synopsis
“Jack (Karyo) is a Parisian living in Papua New Guinea, where he runs a ramshackle outdoor cinema. Two years ago his wife Rose (Finsterer) died in mysterious circumstances. Now he’s self-medicated with booze and dope and obsessed with the memory of his wife, whose flickering, drunken image he revisits nightly on the TV screens in his rickety editing suite.

On a trip to Melbourne to stock up on films for his cinema, Jack encounters writer Kate (Griffiths), and immediately he’s in love. Jack persuades Kate to join him in Papua New Guinea, but the past – and the clues to his wife’s death – remain present in the island’s two other whites: sleazy bar owner Sal (Jacobs), and whiskey-drenched missionary Stevie (Field), who ended up not converting but being converted by the pantheistic Papuans.

The narrative is fractured, reality shifts, and memories rear up out of Jack’s fevered subconscious as he teeters on sanity’s brink. Yet this is also a Douglas Sirk-style melodrama about enduring – in both senses – love. Writer Gene Conkie scripted Hillcoat’s Civil Dead, and To Have And To Hold displays that first film’s fascination with men at the very edge of their capacity to cope. What it lacks, and this probably accounts for the film’s failure to receive a proper theatrical release in 1996, is the sense of purpose that drives Hillcoat’s other films, or their harsh moral tone.

Jack drifts into a booze-fuelled nightmare of his own creation, the past replayed on his own video equipment, but the cinematic references – to The Harder They Come, among others – reflect a fascination with film as a form, rather than with the reality which film seeks to convey, and that same schematic approach is evident throughout the film’s second half.

Cave and Bargeld’s soundtrack is like Ennio Morricone conducting Popol Vuh; the sense of delirium, delusion, isolation and insanity is persistently intriguing; Tchéky Karyo and Rachel Griffiths sweat it out convincingly in the wetly oppressive jungle. But despite the allure of madness and whiskey in exotic climes, whatever it is that To Have And To Hold is grasping towards remains tantalisingly out of reach.”

In this stylish French drama fits well into the film noir genre. A visitor comes to the home of Stephane, the wife of an important magistrate. She, claiming attempted rape, calmly shoots him. The visitor is the legendary gangster Wadek Aslanian who was beloved as a latter day Robin Hood. Stephane’s husband hires a lawyer, Paul, to defend her. Paul learns many disturbing things about Stephane’s sordid past when he starts receiving anonymous letters describing her exploits which included prostitution, performing in porno-movies, and most interestingly having a liaison with Aslanian. The judge is ignorant of his wife’s past. Despite her dark and mysterious past, Paul cannot help but fall in love with Stephane.

Synopsis :
