Plot:

Personally I like this movie very much as a great love story and fairy tail for the grownups. I believe the movies might be more touching for the Asians, (especially for the residents in Taipei or Taiwan, where I came from and the movie filmed) since the whole movie surrounds only one single idea in Chinese as “Yuan-fen”, which is deep rooted in Asians’ mind and personally I think there is still not a proper vocab for translation. (“Fate” is close but not exact.) And the story, the people, and the scenes are so familiar for me that it just like my neighbor’s story.
Another reason I might suggest to treat this movie as a fairy tale is that they do have many goofs or things seems not so logical in the movie, as described by other users. But who cares? Just like nobody questions why the lion in the wizard of oz is so coward. This is still a great love story and grownup fairy tail for me. [imdb]

Its 1949 and World War II never happened. Nikola Tesla has just won a Nobel Prize rather than dying in obscurity and the Japanese Empire is an undying aristocracy where the rich sip tea out of bone china, while the poor die in the gutters. K-20, the Fiend with Twenty Faces, steals from the rich and gives to himself. But now, on the eve of the marriage between society princess, Yoko Hashiba, and chief of police, Kogoro Akechi, the fiend frames simple circus acrobat Hekichi Endo (Takeshi Kaneshiro) for his crimes and the poor sap is arrested and sentenced to death. But he escapes at the last minute and assumes the guise of K-20 in order to clear his good name.

Starting with a falling chandelier from PHANTOM OF THE OPERA and continuing with the Tunguska Explosion, Tesla coils, gyrocopters and all manner of pulp touchstones, this flick is constantly zooming, panning, gliding and skidding to a stop, suffused with old fashioned showmanship and skill. For sheer entertainment value its like all the Saturday morning matinees you never saw wrapped up in one film and given a big budget gloss. But more than the skill and style, the actors are a delight. The young princess, Hashiba (Takako Matsu) describes herself as just a modest girl from a good family, but really shes a two-fisted adventurer in waiting, hemmed in by good breeding but secretly yearning to sock a baddie in the jaw and fly a helicopter into the sunset. Takeshi Kaneshiro is charm itself, and its a pleasure to spend two hours in his company. By the time the last zeppelin has cleared the screen youll want to know where you can buy a ticket and stand in line to wait for the sequel. [D-Man2010]

The film is set in the 1860s, during the Taiping Rebellion in the late Qing Dynasty in China. The story, based on an unresolved crime in 1870, tells of three sworn brothers (played by Andy Lau, Jet Li and Takeshi Kaneshiro) who are forced to turn against one another due to the harsh realities of war and political intrigue.

The beginning of the flim show defeated army officer Qing Yun wandering aimlessly until he met Mi Lan who comforted him. Next scene show Wu Yang coming back from a successful loot. Wu Yang, notice the military boot Qing Yun was wearing and engaged him in a fight. Qing Yun overpowered him causing Wu Yang to admire his fighting skills and promise to introduce him to his elder brother, Er Hu who is the mastermind behind attack on soldier’s supply. After an attack on Er Hu’s village by the military, Qing Yun convinced the gang to join the army and help Qing government fight. It was during these expeditions that cause the tension to raise between the brothers as their opinion and values begin to clash. Minor plot of a love triangle between Andy Lau & Jet Li over a beautiful woman (Xu Jinglei).

The film was originally titled The Blood Brothers (simplified Chinese: 刺马; traditional Chinese: 刺馬). Director Peter Chan said it was influenced by the late Chang Cheh’s 1973 film The Blood Brothers, which is itself based on a famous high profile assassination of a local governor in 1870, but denied that it is a remake. He also decided to change the title to The Warlords in order to avoid confusion.

When asked why he chose to move away from his familiar turf of romance films, Chan said that The Warlords is actually not a martial arts film at its heart, though it contains elements of the martial arts. He added that he had made a wish to make a film depicting men’s affections after watching John Woo’s 1986 film A Better Tomorrow over twenty years ago, and has now finally gotten the chance. His goal is thus to “lead [his] audience to reclaim [the same kind of passion]” as in A Better Tomorrow, which he said is lacking in recent films.
