Set in Viareggio an Italian famous tourist place, this movie is a gentle comedy where we admire a beautiful and remarkable debutant, Jacqueline Sassard supported by a good group of actors – Raf Vallone, Sylva Koscina and the young Raf Mattioli – directed with steady hand by Alberto Lattuada. Based on a subject by Valerio Zurlini, this well scripted movie tells the transformation of a young and spoilt rich girl who discovers the substance of sentiments while living the drama of her parents divorce and the delights of love. The love story is showed in a very delicate way and it is carried out with crescendo untill the nostalgic finale.

In the midst of his early comedic period, Fulci directs this somewhat screwball-ish comedy about two businessmen Parodi (Ernesto Calindri) and Manzini (Luigi Pavese) seeking to make a fast turn on an investment when they decide to establish a youth centre for young women. But they have to convince a local politician, Cipriani Paolini (Louis Seigner) that it’s all going to be fair play, so he sets his secretary Bellini (Philippe Noiret) to supervise the finalization of the agreement. Before you know it, the blokes all want to pass some time, and do so by visiting a trio of masseuses (code for prostitutes), Marisa (Sylva Koscia), Iris (Cristina Gaioni) and Milena (Valeria Fabrizi) who jump at the opportunity as they see a possibility of saving their own massage parlour racket that’s having a hard time financially.

Surprisingly, towards the last half hour Franco and Ciccio turn up as hotel night-portieres who help out the ladies, and fall straight into their brand of comedy pulling faces and making a lot of noise, and as always trying to get a piece of action from the ladies. Good luck with that.

Excellent adventure yarn, great locations, moody music. The last “action-picture” from the late great french director Claude Sautet – from this he went on and did Les choses de la vie, Cesar et Rosalie, Vincent, Francois, Paul et les autres, plus the two masterpieces Un coeur en hiver and Nelly et M.Arnaud, his final movie, from 1994. By the way, he also wrote Borsalino (for Jacques Deray) and Les yeux sans visage (for Georges Franju). L’arme a gauche is not, by all means, a great movie – but compared to the contemporary crap we’re fed every day it’s outstanding. The plot concerns a ship stolen by gun dealers somewhere in Central America, but it’s merely an excuse for 102 minutes of pure joy, given the fact that the lead is played by l’inoubliable Lino Ventura. He alone makes this little movie worth seeing – I mean, the guy was the walking definition of the term cool… Those of you not familiar with Ventura (shame on you!) must not believe that looks are everything – check out his eyes, his moves and his harsh voice in Le clan de siciliens, Ne nous fachons pas or Adieu poulet (not to mention Les tontons flingueurs) and you will agree that he was in the same league with Jean Gabin. To put it another way, one of the best actors ever.
