This classic 1968 documentary highlights the activities of the headquarters of the Black Panther Party in Oakland, California as its members fight for the freedom of its imprisoned co-founder Huey P. Newton.

Quote:

Translation: Agnès Varda made two documentaries on the Black Panthers movement in 1968. Huey immerses himself in the militant atmosphere of the “Free Huey” campaign while Black Panthers focuses on the party’s impact at a local level in the Afro community. Oakland American. Based on her own experience in California where she lived in 1968, the two films introduce us to the culture of “black panthers”. This article compares the aesthetic and political approach of the two documentaries: from the mode of observation adopted in Huey to the mode of exposure that prevails in Black Panthers, the director strives to demystify the portrait of panthers and the threat they embodied in the media. Through a detailed study of Varda’s films, we will endeavor to shed light on the theatrical political strategies developed by the Panthers and put forward in the documentaries as a counterpoint to a more recent historiographical discourse, which emphasizes gender inequalities at the inside the party.
