A girl broods over a failed love affair while the camera roves over her.

Featuring Joan Adler (who also appears in Chinese Checkers), Soliloquy is one of the four early Stephen Dwoskin films that were awarded the Solvey prize at the EXPRMNTL festival in Knokke, Belgium in 1967. “In Soliloquy a girl broods uncertainly over a failed love affair, while the camera roves over her fingers, her cigarette, her knuckles, her lips and the hand mirror in which she peers. In its dark reflection one isolated eye seems a dead thing, twitching; the split between her body and her spoken thoughts becomes a strange bilocation of consciousness; towards the end, an aeroplane drones overhead” (Raymond Durgnat)

‘Inspired by “Ma Mere” by Georges Bataille , and revisited by the Pataphysics of Alfred Jarry , “Further and Particular” obeys it’s own logic. Dwoskin talks about “finding a certain familiarity with chaos”.

An old man remembers the troubled relationship he had with his mother, the erotic games, and the phantasms in which she managed to attract him. The main line gives but a small idea of the film, of its erotic style, its choreographic dimension, its strange fragmentation. The film drifts along an ever renewed invention, intertwining lavish dances, mask games, musical comedy, parodies, permanent repression of the body offering itself as an object of desire to the viewer who is literally seduced.’

Quote:
Oblivion is of a man’s elderly paralytic literally unspeakable monologue of pain and fury as he finds himself caught in the isolation of dependency and sexual loss. His mind attempts to regain a certain equilibrium of desire as the women who he once loved surround his shrinking and shrieking mind with tantalising distain and pornographic voyeurism. They are both real and imaginary and appear, disappear, and suddenly come back to torment his memory. He is motionless and powerless to control even his fantasies, and in the confused, claustrophobic space the inner world of love and hate, death and life, loneliness and togetherness, and sex, all ambiguously collide as if they were torn out of time. His life becomes represented, not as remembrance, but of the traces and signs of an absence. Suggested by the book “Le Con D’Irène” by Louis Aragon.

Adrian Martin wrote:
Dwoskin takes the lurid clichés of literary and cinematic erotica – such as the glimpse of a woman in stockings through a half-open door – and transforms them, through a superb use of constant slow-motion and eerie pieces of found music, into a mode of personal expression close at every moment to the freest poetry or painting.

PLOT: The action of the film evolves around the rooms of a house as one of the main characters, Lisiska, is waiting and is studied in depth as she prepares herself for a meeting & The film attempts to display sexual barriers and misconceptions, and about the role-playing and the confusion around the whole question of sexual and sensual involvement. The essence is the confrontation with self-deception, lies and the real fear of contact with both sexes.’

Quote:
Intensely psychodramatic and compelling, Stephen Dwoskin’s seminal underground first feature resists the straightforward, naive script of the sexually emancipated hippy dream. Instead, darkness, introspection, power play and doubt are given increasing prominence over the pleasures of the flesh as a man and four women interact and test their personal limits.

This deep immersion in dislocated narrative, captured on hand-held 16mm, arguably reflects Dwoskin’s borderless, émigré experience. It’s something he shared with at least one of the cast – the important, highly influential, multi-media American artist Carolee Schneemann who was in London at the time. Other cast members include Verity Bargate (novelist, theatre director and co-founder of the cutting-edge Soho Theatre Company) and Maurice Colbourne (Gangsters, The Day of the Triffids, Doctor Who and Howard’s Way). Gavin Bryars provides the warm, warping drone score that holds us together – viewers and participants/characters – in this strange, Orphée-like netherworld where there is no dialogue and Dwoskin weaves in numerous formal experiments.

Lost dreams is made out of those little remnants of images, from a single glance to a detailed moment, of those women from youth’s love and young dreams. They are woven together, like fragments of the mind, and from the ends of film to the corners of the frame, into a memory of them. They are once again embraced and, if only briefly, poetically honoured.

Intoxicated by My Illness (in which images photographed by several people are extensively superimposed) loosely and dreamily tracks a phase in Dwoskin’s recent life that took him from medical examination to intensive care.

Mostly it is a reverie about erotic fantasy – especially the excruciating, poignant ambiguity of bodily sensation strung out between intense pain and exquisite pleasure, between the figures of the nurse, who might be imagined as a bondage mistress, and the bondage mistress, who touches the ‘dominated’ body in the most tender way imaginable. Dwoskin periodically overlays known ‘movie music’ in order to ironically foreground his own ‘self dramatisation’, all the while drawing us into a rare and precious intimacy in extremis.
