Synopsis:
When Kotaro meets Kuroe, it is love at first sight. They resolve to spend the rest of their lives together. But one day, Kuroe collapses and X-rays reveal something resembling a flower budding in her lung. She refuses surgery and goes home with Kotaro, unable to drink water, lest the bud blooms. When Kotaro discovers that other flowers in the room cause the first water lily to shrivel up, so he fills the house with fresh flowers. Kotaro loses his job, but is more than ever desperate to meet the expense of fresh flowers for Kuroe. Kotaro is finally offered a job with the florist. The house literally shrinks around Kuroe, as the flower blooms inside her and she fades away.

Quote:
The haunting image of a young woman who discovers the bud of a flower is growing in her lung is at the center “L’Ecume des Jours,” one of the most famous novels of the influential post-war French author Boris Vian, a story that is transferred to Japan in Go Riju’s version of the book. Filled with beautiful imagery and intriguing elements, the film is nevertheless a little too languid to achieve widespread acceptance. However, further exposure on the fest route may give it a profile that could result in niche distribution in some territories.

Twenty years after making his breakout cult hit, “Tetsuo,” and 17 years after its sequel, “Tetsuo II: Body Hammer,” multihyphenate filmmaker Shinya Tsukamoto busts out the big guns again with “Tetsuo the Bullet Man.” Contempo-set pic doesn’t bring much new to the half-man-half-machine concept, but with its delirious editing and eardrum-crunching soundtrack, it punches above its weight and musters a certain retro charm with its old-school effects, all done on about one-hundredth of the budget of a “Transformers” movie. Fans of the franchise will have this in their sights and show support, but crossover potential looks iffy.
Half-American, half-Japanese Anthony (Erik Bossick) has always strived to keep a tight rein on his anger by singing nursery rhyme “Hush, Little Baby” whenever he’s agitated, a trick his mother taught him before she died. Now a salaryman in Tokyo, he lives with his wife, Yuriko (Akiko Monou), and son, Tom (Tiger Charlie Gerhardt).

But when a mysterious driver (helmer Tsukamoto himself) deliberately murders Tom by running him over, Anthony starts to get in touch with his anger in a way most bereavement therapists wouldn’t approve of: His body begins to turn into black, living metal, sprouting weapons and all kinds of spiky bits. A huge Gatling gun, for instance, grows out of his chest, which comes in handy when a bunch of uniformed hitmen try to kill him.

Turns out Anthony’s father, Ride (Stephen Sarrazin), a former biochemist, is to blame, a fact Anthony uncovers by digging around in his dad’s basement, where he makes an even more alarming discovery about his late mom.

Thesps deliver their lines entirely in English, and often sound stilted in the quieter moments, but hey, that kind of goes with the machine-people theme. On the other hand, the script’s emphasis on familial, especially parental love makes for a gentler, kinder Tetsuo movie, entirely lacking in the creepy sexual dimension of the first two pics.

Co-editors Tsukamoto and Yuji Ambe show nimble, frenetic fingers in the editing suite as they slice and dice the action sequences and the pic’s frequent trippy interludes into thousands of cuts, all the better to distract from the lack of sets. Sound design pushes the dial well past 11, adding undeniable visceral impact.

In a big city, a wave of suicides catches fire. The modus operandi is always the same: the victims wildly stab themselves to death, cut their own throats and butcher themselves beyond recognition, without any apparent reason. The only thing the dead have in common is the phone number they call just before they perish at their own hand. Keiko, a crack policewoman, takes it upon herself to solve the case. Soon enough she reaches the conclusion that someone is entering the victims’ dreams and persuading them to take their own lives. She appeals to Kyoichi, a man known as a nightmare detective who can enter the dreams of others, to help. When Wakimaya, one of Keiko’s colleagues, falls victim to the killer, Keiko takes the risk and dials the number, though she knows that she may well be the next suicide on the list.

Quote:
When suicide hotline counselor Rinko (Asuka Kurosawa) receives explicit photos of herself from a mysterious caller, she is thrown into a depraved game of hidden fantasies and unrestrained sexual desire. As the voyeuristic stalker becomes determined to alter her passionless life, Rinko’s compulsively clean husband Shigehiko (Yuji Koutari) attempts to hunt him down and the three disillusioned soul’s paths will inevitably intertwine.

Tsukamoto’s visual style is unmistakably daring and A Snake of June is no exception. Bathed in blue to suggest the unrelenting presence of water, the images created are painstakingly crafted and unforgettably bizarre. Close-ups of snails, drains, and circular windows mix with frantic shots of action and nightmarishly surreal dreams pepper reality. Far more linear than some of Tsukamoto’s previous efforts, there’s still plenty of hallucinatory imagery to comprehend, most memorably the sex show dream sequence accenting the themes of voyeurism and the contrast of viewing the organic through circles. Frenetic editing and dizzying camera-work also strive to keep this thriller from ever slowing down, and even during extended single shots on a stationary subject, the camera refuses to stay put, heightening the sense of voyeurism and paranoia. Even in the chapter breaks, Tsukamoto’s maddeningly creative artistry is at work as curious symbols denote the passing of time and the gradual joining of figures.

To match the delirious visuals is a fantastically diverse array of sound effects and music from composer Chu Ishikawa. Unending rain echoes in every scene and foreboding strings alternate the mood from morose to morbid, yet there’s always a calming satisfaction from the violins. Percussive tribalistic music heavy with the sounds of clanging metal enhances the tense scenes of violence and operatic tones waft through the more surrealistic segments.

With disturbing imagery reminiscent of David Lynch’s Eraserhead (but with more meaningful parallels and less unexplained randomness), A Snake of June is a brilliant examination of voyeurism, buried desires, and suppressed passion through the looking glass of a twisted genius. Tsukamoto again proves he is the master of the sadistically surreal and has long since passed his American counterparts in both style and presentation.
