While its fashion and social setting are somewhat dated, the 1988 film still packs a punch with its deeply poignant tale of friendship and love that is repeatedly derailed by materialistic greed and lamentable life decisions.

Maggie Cheung Man-yuk and Cherie Chung Chor-hung play Nancy and So-so, best friends since age 17. Romantic yet unadventurous, Nancy soon settles for a thankless job at a fashion company and enters her mid-20s without ever being in a relationship. Meanwhile, So-so plots aggressively to rise above her humble family background, stopping her education early to work as a nightclub hostess. She then surrounds herself with rich older men, before agreeing to marry one for money.

The pair’s friendship comes under threat when their mutual high school crush, Jia-ming (Shingo Tsurumi, also in 1986’s Immortal Story), re-enters the picture. Nancy is helplessly smitten with Jia-ming, but Jia-ming only has eyes for So-so. However, So-so proceeds with her marriage despite knowing that Jia-ming is her one true love. Meanwhile, the Sino-British negotiations over Hong Kong and the 1987 financial crash bring tragedy to the characters in more ways than one.

Nobuko commonly called Nonko who is 36 years old and a once-divorced woman returns Shinto shrine that her family runs, to help out around the house. There is no drive and no place to belong, just a backwards little country town. The only thing she does is riding her bicycle and going to the bar to drink with the owner, an another divorcee. She cannot remember the last time she had sex. One day, Nonko encounters a young man named Masaru who has great expectations about selling chicks at shrine’s festival. Masaru is rather naive and pitiable, but this earnest and straightforward younger man puts a smile back on her face, and she gradually becomes more emotionally and physically receptive…

Aspiring to be admitted to a good university and to become a lawyer, Tasiro Yuusuke, a tenth-grader from Kyushu, enrols in a prestigious high school in Tokyo. Plans are made for him to live in his uncle’s house, part of which is rented out while his uncle is abroad on business. A realtor’s mistakes leaves Tasiro sharing the house with Kei Yamaba, the most beautiful girl in the school, who is also his classmate. There is the risk that their unexpected ‘co-habitation’ will be discovered by the school authorities. While he grows increasingly attracted to her, he is often irritated by her innocent and nonchalant attitude towards their predicament. They each develop other romantic attachments, but end up turning to each other.
