Synopsis:
When swaggering and conceited teddy boy Mike isn’t combing his wavy hair in a stance reminiscent of The Fonz, he’s latching onto each and every female who crosses his slimy path. The guy is bad news and has everybody fooled, except Mr. Dite, an advertising executive and recent recipient of Mike’s services as a whip-wielding sadist. Taking advantage of the weak-willed masochist, Mike blackmails Dite into giving him a cushy job, then takes advantage of his new position by stealing Dite’s clients, seducing Dite’s elegant daughter, Sara, and climbing his way up the social ladder.

Take a deep breath, meditate for a few moments to cleanse the mind, make sure there are no sharp objects in the room, strap on a seat belt, and carefully enter the world of Too Much Too Often, yet another slice of unintentional surrealism from The First Lady of Sexploitation, director/producer DORIS WISHMAN (here billed under the name of her then-husband, Louis Silverman). But beware: your mind may never be the same…

When swaggering and conceited teddy boy Mike (played by fleshy-faced BUCK STARR) isn’t combing his wavy hair in a stance reminiscent of The Fonz, he’s latching onto each and every female who crosses his slimy path. The guy is bad news and has everybody fooled, except Mr. Dite (rotund BOB ORAN), an advertising executive and recent recipient of Mike’s services as a whip-wielding sadist. Taking advantage of the weak-willed masochist, Mike blackmails Dite into giving him a cushy job, then takes advantage of his new position by stealing Dite’s clients, seducing Dite’s elegant daughter, Sara (JOANNE CUNNINGHAM), and climbing his way up the social ladder.

But Dite’s daughter isn’t enough to fill Mike’s sexual appetite and he makes conquests of a parade of women who find him irresistible. There’s Lynn (SHARON KENT), the lovely college coed; Lita, the hooker with a heart of gold; Ellen, the dockside floozie whose husband neglects her; and Midge, the naive secretary who falls for Mike’s lies and unknowingly gives him the information he needs to screw over Dite. He uses all of these women and discards them like old snot rags. And when Lynn tells him she’s pregnant, he proceeds to beat her up. He also slaps Lita around when she doesn’t make her quota, and promptly dumps Midge after she hands over the files he needs.

Meanwhile, Dite desperately tries to bribe Mike into leaving his daughter alone and even tells Sara what a sick perv Mike really is, but Sara ignores him and she and Mike plan to elope. Which is when Sam (New York nudie vet SAM STEWART), a detective with a bad foreign accent, enters the scene. Angry that Mike had once-upon-a-time pulverized him and attacked his wife (DARLENE BENNETT in a rare good-girl role), Sam takes his revenge…

Director Doris actually used a few different locations to shoot Too Much Too Often (as opposed to her usual apartment), but her quirky trademarks still remain: the convoluted and typically bizarre plot, the strange post-dubbed dialogue put in mouths mostly off-screen, the oddball cutaways to inanimate objects, sexploitation starlets admiring themselves in the mirror; bras, panties, fishnets and spike heels galore; and very expressive feet which share equal screen time with the actors.

Description:
Blonde (wigged) and beautiful New York City model Sharon Kent (who was also a favorite of Barry Mahon) stars as Ann, a lovely secretary whose life is perfect. Her best friend Babs (middle-aged and buxom Jackie Richards) works with her in a friendly office and her boyfriend Bob recently proposed to her. Her world comes crashing down around her, however, when a creepy bespectacled geek (Wishman regular Michael Alaimo) begins stalking her. Through a supernatural mishap (which is never explained, but who cares?), the stalker finds a blonde doll and a tacky ring in the garbage can and suddenly, everything he does to the doll, Ann can feel being done to her! As the loser whips, feels up, undresses and puts a cigarette out on the doll, Ann feels every bit of it, and begins to believe her mind is unraveling. Babs is too busy whoring it up with a foreign sleazeball (Buck Starr, of TOO MUCH, TOO OFTEN) and Bob is away on business. Can she escape this hell?

INDECENT DESIRES is well-known to most cult film viewers, even if they don’t realize it. Clips of creepy Michael Alaimo stripping the clothes off a doll and heroine Sharon Kent with her head cocked at an odd angle have appeared in Something Weird’s trademark clip trailer, so it’s great to see one of Doris’ best get the digital treatment. Those familiar with the Wishman universe will be surprised to note that there are few pointless cutaway shots to injavascript:void(0)animate objects, feet and the dubbed dialogue is matched with the actors’ lips, making this one of her most technically accomplished films. Cinematographer C. Davis Smith was always in top form working on his many Wishman films, and his swooping hand-held camerawork is in full force here, including many breathtaking time capsule shots of New York City and effective close-ups of the characters, the mysterious doll and fabulous shadowy lighting. Sharon Kent, whose statuesque form graced many New York City-area skinflicks, gives a surprisingly good performance here, even though her hysterics can be a little ridiculous at times, and has never looked more beautiful. Thirty-something Jackie Richards was one of the oldest women in sexploitation, but that didn’t stop her from flaunting her naturally large bust in countless nudie films of the mid-to-late-60s. Smith directed her film debut, ALL MY MEN, a year earlier, and may have been the person to recommend her to Wishman for this film, where she has a well-photographed love scene and performs nude exercises directly into the camera lens! A pretty non-descript title hides behind it a vastly entertaining and never boring roughie, with supernatural themes and a typical downbeat Wishman ending. Highly recommended!
