Synopsis:
A writer meets five widows on a train to Puri, one of them played by Sharmila Tagore. As the six lives begin to intertwine, the taboos of widowhood emerge; but so, too, does a philosophy of life and hope for the future. The performers collectively won Best Actress at India’s National Film Awards in 1964. Director Tapan Sinha creates another great film of novelistic complexity.

This movie is way ahead of it’s time in depicting society’s attitudes towards widows in India, who were confined to their homes and could never re-marry.

This movie is an adaptation of the novel with the same name by eminent Bengali
writer Samaresh Basu, who wrote this travelogue under his pen name ‘Kalkut’.

Synopsis:

Shyamalendu (Barun Chanda) is a successful executive at a fan company where he is expecting a promotion shortly. His life revolves around his work and socialising with colleagues along with his wife, Dolan (Paromita Chaudhuri). His sister-in-law, Tutul (Sharmila Tagore) comes to stay with them for a few days. She is given a tour of the life they lead – in restaurants, beauty parlours, clubs and race courses.

But then crisis strikes in the form of agitation at the factory just before the shipment of a prestigious export order and Shyamalendu is held to blame. With the help of a shady labour officer, Shyamalendu averts the crisis by declaring a lock-out at the factory after staging a false riot. For his ‘efficient’ handling of the crisis, Shyamalendu is promoted and there is congratulations all around – except from Tutul, who has understood the vacuousness of Shyamalendu’s world and has hated it. Shyamalendu is left successful and desolate – at the top.

Mausam (Seasons) is a 1975 Indian film directed by Gulzar and loosely based on the novel, The Judas Tree, by A.J. Cronin. Sharmila Tagore for her acting received The Silver Lotus Award at the 23rd National Film Festival and the movie was honoured by presenting an award for 2nd Best Feature Film. The movie bagged two of eight nominations at the 24th Filmfare Awards. The background score for the movie was composed by Salil Chowdhury and the songs were composed by Madan Mohan.

It tells the tragic love story between a doctor and the daughter of a traditional healer. As with all Gulzar films, the strength is in its writing and dialogue. It also features excellent performances by the leads Sharmila Tagore and Sanjeev Kumar.
