This Is England ’90 is a 2015 British TV drama miniseries written by Shane Meadows and Jack Thorne and produced by Warp Films.

A spin-off from the 2006 film This Is England, it is also a sequel to the series This Is England ’86 and This Is England ’88. This Is England ’90, was originally due in late 2012, but in July 2012, director Shane Meadows announced that the production had been put on hold in order for him to complete his documentary about reunited Manchester rock band The Stone Roses, and the actors were still waiting for confirmation as to when filming would start. In March 2014, Meadows confirmed that shooting would start later in the year although he had not yet finished the script. Meadows confirmed that this will likely be the final series of the saga.

This Is England ’90 looks at rave culture and the 1990 FIFA World Cup. According to Meadows, it will follow Shaun, Kelly, Trev and Gadget who are involved in the rave scene. Woody and Milky have opened a scooter shop, while Combo is released from prison after serving his sentence for the manslaughter of Mick in This Is England ’86. Flip and Higgy from the motorcycle gang in This Is England ’86 are more prominently featured in the cast in this series.

Similar to the film and the two previous series, ’90 featured a montage of the era at the beginning of the first episode, featuring the resignation of Margaret Thatcher set to the song “There She Goes” by The La’s. Each episode is set against a different season of the year.

This Is England ’88 is a 2011 British drama series written by Shane Meadows and Jack Thorne. It is a spin-off from the 2006 film This Is England, and set five years later. Like the film, This Is England ’88 stars Thomas Turgoose as Shaun, Vicky McClure as Lol and Joe Gilgun as Woody. The story takes place over Christmas 1988.

Set during Christmas 1988, Lol is haunted by the devastating events that took place two and a half years before. She and Woody both find themselves struggling to cope with their lives without each other after he leaves the gang. Lol is carrying the burden of her guilt, whilst Woody is trying to build a domestic life with a new girlfriend and a potential promotion at work. Shaun has started drama college and, although still in a relationship with Smell, he has grown close to a girl performing in his Christmas play.

Writing for The Guardian, Euan Ferguson said that it “was all phenomenal” and “roll on their next story”. Paddy Shennan writing for the Liverpool Echo also rated the series, calling it the best drama series of 2011. However, Hugh Montgomery writing for The Independent found all the misery “increasingly irritating”. The series won the award for Best Mini Series at the 2012 BAFTA Television Awards, and also led to a Best Actor nomination for Joseph Gilgun (Woody) and a second successive Best Actress nomination for Vicky McClure (Lol).

Enter Shaun (snaggletoothed Thomas Turgoose), a 12-year-old spitfire who has lost his dad in the Falklands war. On the last day of school, he gets ragged on for wearing flares and trades punches with the kid who teased him.
The impressionable boy is befriended by charismatic skinheads led by Woody (Joe Gilgun) who adopt Shaun as their mascot. They shave his head so that it looks like a fist, dress him in Ben Sherman shirts, suspenders and Doc Martens, and all march the streets like Alex and his droogs in A Clockwork Orange.
For Woody and the guys, who include an affable Jamaican named Milky (Andrew Shim), not having jobs is an opportunity to hang out, listen to music, smoke. And should they have a spell of excess energy, they can always take hammers to abandoned apartments.
Their idyll ends when Combo (Stephen Graham), an ex-con, rejoins the gang, bringing with him the racist hate he learned in prison. Combo’s ferocity appeals to Shaun, who stays under his wing as the rest of the members fly off with Woody’s flock.
Meadows makes a distinction between the slacker skinheads, with their love of West Indian music, and the overwrought neo-Nazi nationalists that terrorize immigrants. As these two different groups fight for Shaun’s allegiance, the fatherless 12-year-old makes his first moral decision. Does he want to be son of racially pure England or kid brother in the family of man?
Until the final scene of Meadows’ edgy, uneasy film, the suspense is killing.
