Synopsis:
The story of a family in Tokyo who live under the same roof in a large house and include the widowed sixty-year-old mother, older son and his wife, the youngest daughter and the older daughter who, while being married, is experiencing domestic problems and has moved back in. The latter woman’s husband soon dies however making the move permanent. With life insurance money flowing in she not only can afford to pay rent, but also loan some cash to her brother who unbeknownst to his mother has taken on a loan from the bank with the house as collateral. The loan was needed as his wife’s aunt’s factory needs an infusion of funds.

Married for a decade, a couple have no child. He is a lawyer, however, and as a result of one of his cases has the daughter of an imprisoned man living with them. The girl, who is understated, has a boyfriend, but otherwise only ventures out to meet her jailed father. The family is visited by the daughter of a friend from Osaka who has made the journey without informing her parents. That her personality is the opposite of the girl who lives in the house is obvious. At the same time, the wife runs into her own ex and the husband faints at work due to exhaustion. The live-in girl tends to the husband in a way that leaves the latter’s wife concerned.

Review:
In one of the most honest depictions of traditional marriage i’ve ever seen, Setsuko Hara plays a weary and cynical housewife grating against her second class status. Her husband is an old fashioned guy who isn’t cut out for the rat race; he’s got a lot of job related stress but refuses to allow her a life outside the home. A sudden rain leads to a meeting with the new neighbors that will shake up all of their lives. A spare and simple drama with some lighter moments and an odd ending that sees the couple lifted out of their lethargy, if only temporarily. Loved the apparently diegetic piano music on the soundtrack, a clear reference to Setsuko’s thwarted ambitions that’s later revealed to be a neighbor’s obsessive practicing. It’s great to see Setsuko in such an overtly feminist role.

In many of his most successful films, Naruse depicted common people, living their lives. With Repast the director set his characters to the task of navigating their way amidst a pungent atmosphere of fading love. Set shortly after World War II, Repast is about a struggling marriage between salaryman Hatsunosuke (Ken Uehara) and his wife Michiyo (Setsuko Hara). It focuses on the emotional crisis of the bored housewife. The tedium of her domestic life – consumed by repetitive tasks such as cooking and cleaning – is brought into focus by a visit from Hatsunosuke’s niece, Satoko (Yukiko Shimazaki). Satoko’s arrival, and the amount of attention Hatsunosuke devotes to her charms, leads to further unhappiness for Michiyo, who is forced to confront her future. In the hands of master director Naruse, this adaptation of an unfinished novel by Fumiko Hayashi offers a fascinating exploration of married life, from the habitual routine of everyday existence to the hope for a better tomorrow that may or may not keep such relationships alive.
