PLOT SUMMARY :
Italian-American laborer Geremio works as a bricklayer on dangerous construction jobs, with his friends Luigi, Julio, Giovanni and DeLucey. When his best girl Kathleen refuses to marry him because he has no ambition beyond his work, Geremio asks Luigi to send to Italy for the young Annuziata to be his bride. Annunziata’s one condition before coming is that Geremio must have a house of his own, but Geremio can’t wait and lies to her in a letter. Their meeting and wedding is a joyous success. She forgives him and they start to save for a house from his meagre salary while living in a tenement and raising children; but economic events cripple their plans, and worse, tempt him to betray his fellow workers.

Ex-con Johnny (Stanley Baker) used his time in prison wisely – to plan the biggest robbery of his career. The robbery goes smoothly and Johnny goes to bury the money in a field until the heat is off, as agreed with friend and racketeer Mike Carter (Sam Wanamaker) and the rest of the gang. In a moment of weakness, Johnny pockets five hundred odd pounds from the haul. Coupled with a tip-off from his ex-girlfriend (Jill Bennett) this proves to be his undoing and Johnny is soon back in prison. The rest of the gang try in vain to get the location of the money out of him without success until Mike hits upon the idea of a break-out using Johnny’s new love Suzanne (Margit Saad) as bait.

Plot Synopsis by Sandra Brennan
In this crime drama, an American loses all his money and finds himself stranded in England. He finds hope when he meets a female smuggler who has brought jewels into the country inside a teddy bear. Just before he talks her into helping him, she is pushed off of a cliff. He becomes the prime suspect and mayhem ensues when he gets the jewels, but then loses them to a gang of thieves. Fortunately, by the story’s end, he proves his innocence, and brings the gang to justice.
